files & settings transfer

i have saved my files and settings from my previous vaio onto an external hdd and now i want to send them to my new vaio laptop how can i do this?thanks

Hi amj.designs,

With the external HDD attached, re-run the files & settings transfer wizard on the new computer, select “ This is the new computer…..”, select I don't need the wizard disk...", and on the next window select "other..." and browse to the folder location of the transfer file that you created on the external hard drive.....

hi,i have done that at the beginning and i get this message
the location you have specified does not contain stored information
if you have entered a path to a folder on a removable disc the disc must be in the drive. what does that mean?

I am not entirely sure what that message is all about, but have you selected a folder on your removable drive with a name similar to USMT2.UNC? Do you have a folder xxxxx.UNC on the removeable drive?

I have never encountered this problem before; maybe another member has and will be able to shed some light on this…

Is there any possibility of connecting the two computers with an Ethernet “crossover" cable and trying the transfer that way?

i went and checked on google to see if there is an answer but i noticed that many people had this problem,im rcovering my laptop just to see if i put the original name on my previous to match the new one if that will work.also what kind of files are these and which application can open them?
i cannot connect with ethernet cable as the hdd is just in a metal case that i connect to the laptop via usb unless you can tell me another way of doing this,thanks

They are .UNC files and ‘files & settings transfer wizard’ should recognise them….

Unfortunately unless the two computers are still functioning the Ethernet “crossover" cable route will not work:smileysad:

i have got two laptops in the house plus the external hard drive can i connect the laptop to the external hdd via usb and then link both laptops with ethernet cable?

I found the following on another support site which may very well have some relevance to your problem:

"I ran into the same problem a while back. The problem is that you are using
and used two different versions of the FST Wizard.

I assume when you reformatted the new drive and loaded XP you did all the latest Windows updates? If so see if you installed KB896344.

This is an upgrade of the FSTW and if you used an older version to export your settings you must use the same version to import them. You have two choices here. Either upgrade the old computer with the KB896344 and rerun the FTSW or downgrade the newer one and remove KB896344."

i have tried that still not happening,the only thing iv noticed is the external drive this time opened as autoplay which i don't know if it's relevant

yes i have and still not working.microsoft aswell tried with no joy
could anyone help with a software to extract the files from the external harddrive?my hard drive is fujitsu MHT2030AT.THANKS
