AC Adaptor Help!!

Hi Gang,

I really hope someone can help me.

Whilst out doing a sports event I have somehow managed to leave behind my AC Adaptor for the Sony VGN-VE11H. No one has laid claim to seeing it and I fear that it has gone forever.

With this in mind, I have a AC Adaptor for an older model of Vaio, the Sony FX103, the connector is the same and fits the power socket in the VE11H no problems, it's rating is also 19.5V as inscribed near the socket on the laptop.

My question is would I be safe in using this adaptor with my Vaio or would it not charge/work even though the connector fits the power slot? I recall the original adaptor for the VE11H was a lot larger and heavier than the spare one I have.

Can anyone with this sort of experience/knowledge let me know if it would be safe to do so?

Many Thanks
Mansoor Ahmed

Hi Mansoor,

I assume that your notebook is the VGN FE11H?

Although both adaptors have a 19v output the one for the FE11H is rated at 4.7amp (providing 91 watts) and the FX103 adaptor is rated at 3.79amp (74 watts). The rating power is of course a worst case scenario when everything is happening at once, ie battery charging, CD and hard drives working and all USB ports etc. operating.

Assuming that the polarity of the connector is the same, you are unlikely to experience any problems in the short term, but if you are constantly requesting more power than can be provided then damage to the power supply will result and you may also experience shutdowns/freezing, but this is unlikely to cause any permanent damage to the notebook.

Your call but in the long term I would bite the bullet and get the correct power adaptor (VGP-AC19V12)

Rich912

Thanks for your time and assistance my friend. Yeah, its the VGN-FE11H.

I have only just had the unit for two weeks and at a sports event managed to loose it, typical!

Your comments made sense. However, would it be safe to just use the FX103 adaptor say to charge the battery rather than use the laptop on the mains with this?

Short term, if I can get away with using the spare adaptor soley to recharge the battery and run the VE11H on battery power then it would be great. Would that be safe to do?

I would never run the risk of damaging the power circuit and so wont dare using the spare adaptor on the mains just in case.

Thanks for your support.

It would be very unlikely that you would damage anything on the notebook by using this particular adaptor to either run the computer or charge the battery. The damage, if any, would be to the adaptor itself.

The most important consideration is that they both have the same output voltage and connector polarity and as they are both original Sony adaptors I cannot think that the latter would be otherwise. The lower rating power of the FX103 adaptor just means that it may not cope with the full power demand that the FE11H may require under FULL load.

Thanks for the info guys.

Rich912, I managed to get my hands on a adaptor which is VGP-AC19V10, is this the same as the VGP-AC19V11 or 12?
Its the same power rating, 19.5v, chucking out 4.7 amps, so assume its ok.

Just wanted to make sure as you seem more clued up about this than me!

Thanks again for your support, you're a gent.

Regards

Naturally every supplier will tell you to exclusively use the exact AC-adapter intended for the device in the first place, but as long as V, A , plug and polarity are requal, it should be fine.

All Vaio's have either 19.5V (black DC-in) or 16V (yellow DC-in) with the same polarity, so if you have a Vaio 19V AC adapter, you only need to make sure that it supplies equal or more Amps than the original one.

If you want to use a weaker adapter, ensure the performance this can not supply will not be needed - for example by removing the battery when you want to run the unit on the mains, or not running the unit when you charge the battery.

Hi Mansoor,

As Dilbert has confirmed, voltage output and connector polarity are the most important considerations and as the VGP-AC19V10 has exactly the same rating power as the VGP-AC19V12 I can’t see that you will encounter any problems.
