It seems that you are doing all the correct things, but Sony suggests that you restore the BIOS defaults before using the recovery disks. Here is a LINK to the recovery guide for your model.

I am trying to run the recovery disc on a PCG-V505. I get the error message: run time error 70. I have adminstration rights and have closed all the programs. The anti virus software is up to date. The laptop has become increasingly slower so I want o do a clean install. It is on a wifi system and I disabled the wifi. Any suggestions? Thank you

Hi Jonti,

Runtime Error 70 is "Permission Denied" and usually happens when you are reinstalling a program where the original is being used by your system.

You say you have closed all programs - have you checked for any TSRs loaded automatically at Startup? Start>>All Programs>>Startup. Right -click on any programs and delete them (You may find Vaio Launcher there!).

I presume you have looked in Task Manager and ended anything running there that is not a system process?

EDIT: It is also possible that the destination location is invalid or does not have proper rights!

Yes, I have deleted all the programs in Start Up.
When I put the recovery disc in the drive I get a dialogue box that says: Vaio Recovery Utility. Welcome to the Vaio recovery and documentation disc. From the next screen you can access the user guide, install applications and recover your system. I click on continue and get the error message. I have clicked on the CD icon in My Computer and opened the disc and read the user files. I can't find instructions on how to recover the system which is what I want to do. I have tried closing down the laptop with the CD in the drive (as I used to for another Sony laptop and a Sony PC) and then rebooting to recover the system.
Thank you for any help.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I also found the original installation hard copy (I never throw anything away including most of my old computers and their paper work!). I placed the CD in drive and reboot (as I had done previously), the 'Link' and hard copy instructions said to hit any key when you see 'hit any key' on the screen. This did not work so I hit a key when I saw the Sony logo, it then said 'hit any key' so I did and got to do a clean install. The laptop is working wonderfully well now and even let me install my HP wifi printer with out the problems I had with it last time.
Many thanks.
