What are its strongest good points?

In which aspects it fails completely?

Ah this is going to make for an interesting topic.

I think it's OK, no, so-so, it's not very good but it's not so bad I feel like it's like Windows ME.

I quite like the RSS feeds on the desktop, but I find the clock silly and I think Aero is a waste of resources.

Plus this silly stuff like Games manager and all that extra stuff, useless.

I do like readyboot and I like the design of the start menu

I absolutely hate it.

I'm not a dinosaur - I love new things & when I first used XP it really was WOW! I loved it.

I've had this notebook & pre-installed Vista for a week now & I think Vista is a disaster.

I can't play any little website videos(don't know the proper name for them). Not talking about dodgy sites either. These are from Daily Telegraph, Channel 4 News, Eurosport etc.

I'm angry that Photoshop Elements 5 was pre-installed & when I try to open a picture in it, it says "not compatable with Vista"

I'm angry that before I even got started, Sony had to produce updates to resolve issues, one of them instructing me to un-install, then re-install the Bluetooth program.

Storage of files, pictures, music is unnecessarily complicated.

XP is simple, elegant and logical.

Dell are offering to uninstall Vista & install XP on new machines on request. I'm going to see if that's possible on this.

Thanks for the info. I'm not competent or confident to do it myself but I will pay a visit to my local PC doctor & ask him to do it for me!

Vista has taken a lot of flak, mostly from people talking out of their rear, with very little experience.

'Media Center Reciever Service' crashes constantly on me. That's my main problem. Otherwise, I've found serious stability, and a huge number of user-facing improvements... this is the first windows I can say I've actually really enjoyed using. Media Center is fantastic, happily working with my linux server to pull in my media library, and handles so much stuff with aplomb that it's what I turn to first to handle media for group (or convenient) display. Media player is a massive improvement, the active searching is the don for large libraries. Start menu is a massive jump forward, I don't think people realise how much depth there is to it now... anything I do these days usually starts with the windows key, whether finding a phone number, running an application, or playing media (I used to use this from the days it was a seperate java application called LookOut, for Outlook only). OS-level RSS integration is nice, and the addition of 'tagging' is very welcome for managing files and data. I dismissed the winkey+tab as a gimmick to start with, but realise now it's an excellent tool for getting an overview of what's running quickly - I have legitimate uses for it these days, not just as eye-candy!

On the downside... some large-scale applications are showing their creakiness, creakiness that has been there for several generations, despite their recent high-profile acquisitions... and whether microsoft totally mistimes their release of vista is a story yet to unfold - the worst aspect of this being the amount of misinformation out there about it. Some of the 'ultimate' functionality should be released into all editions, and this was a bit cheeky on MS's part. Otherwise, it's been a dream for me. Well designed and informative all round. Device support and syncing (photos, mp3 players, cameras, WM5 phones) have been flawless and a joy to use - that's *never* been the case before, on any OS or hardware.

Sorry to buck the trend, I know most people want to hear that it's 'awful'. I've used computers for around 20 years, and I can say they've really done a good job of this - you can smell the young blood at MS. Very happy I waited for a Vista machine, and didn't join the hordes braying for their XP downgrade.

Adobe has a patch to fix this problem. You should be able to download it if you run photoshop again and when you get the incompatibility message you should be able to click the visit Adobe.com for the update patch from there.

I've remembered something else.

Last June I bought a Canon PowerShot S3IS which I love. It comes with ArcSoft photo editing software which I'd not used before but it's brilliant.

Not compatible with Vista.

Thanks for that. I've downloaded it & it's working fine.

But this perfectly illustrates why Vista is so infuriating. I shouldn't have to go to all this trouble to edit my photos. So many things aren't compatible & I should think manufacturers of other programs are furious that their customers have to go through this rigmarole each time.

When I clicked on the error message it didn't link me to anywhere.

When I looked on the Photoshop site - I just saw the $$$$$ signs!! Found the upgrade now.

I hate window's vista with a PASSION. I hated it since day one. I had a Beta version of it last September. It irritated me then and it irritates me now, lol. The fact that my Vaio came with it made me sad, but changing of the times I guess. Doesn't change my feelings though...VISTA IS CRAP! As a semi intelligent person I feel I had a lot more control over my computer with XP, but that's just me.

Installed Vista in my Blu-ray laptop which once id done meant that it was no longer a blu-ray laptop thats neat thanks Sony thanks microsoft-perhaps sometime soon you will give me a vista patch for my blu-ray laptop so i can watch blu-ray films then again perhaps not!

Did you upgrade to Vista or did your Vaio have Vista pre-installed..

I guess it was an upgrade, if so, Sony are working on a full installer of WinDVD BD for Vista, hopefully it will be available soon..

I upgraded to Vista Prem on my Ar21s which came with Xp installed!
