VGN-FS285H getting very hot

Hi, ever since I got my laptop it keeps getting so hot underneath that I cannot put it on my knees because it starts to burn me, anyone got any ideas.

what is the normal running temperature of your vaio..?

Have just downloaded that program it says crit temp is 105 and passive cooling is 95 and the graph say temp is 84 degrees celius and hdd is 48 is this anything to be concerned about.

Hi tiggerssprings

Those temperatures are high, try clearing the cooling vents of dust with compressed air (you should be able to get this from your local PC shop), holding the can upright give the vents a short blast from a distance of approx. 10cm if you hold the can to close you could damage the fan..

If you do not notice any improvement then your vaio may need to be disassembled in order to deep clean the fan and cooling vents..

I had this problem with my FS-315s - the problem was fixed when I changed the option in the VAIO power management tab of windows xp power settings to 'adaptive' instead of performance. I havent noticed and speed difference, its just been cooler and quieter.

Yes, setting CPU control to adaptive is better than performance. When set to performance, the CPU is always running at full speed, so even when idle, it's going to get hot. If you set it to adaptive, it will run at about 800MHz until you do something, e.g. open an application, then will run at full speed to complete the task, before dropping back down again. Therefore, you notice virtually no difference is speed.

You may also want to consider cleaning the heatsink with some compressed air and/or putting so decent thermal paste on the CPU (if you're the daring type). Check out http://www.sebby.me.uk/vaio/ and you'll see about half way down the page that I show how to do it.

I have a similar problem with my FE41Z...

Processor: 71ºC (158ºF)
Core 1: 66ºC (151ºF)
Core 2: 68ºC (154ºF)
HDD: 45ºC (113ºF)

Not good is it? What should I do? I can't clean it because the source of the enourmous heat is on the underside of where I would put my right hand when I'm typing. Should I contact Support?

No fans seem to activate or anything, and I'm kind of worried...

Please suggest something or this is going to blow up in flames...

P.S.: I left it all night downloading, and I always have it at maximum pawer; but this shouldn't be an issue, should it?

Yeah, it is.

Could it be a problem with the fans? because they don't pop up...

I can't really send it in right now because I really need it for work; in the meantime, I've contacted e-support... but at those temperatures, the fans should have clicked to life, shouldn't they?

Yes, they should definately be turning at that tempreture, which signals they need to be replaced.

Putting it off might actually cause more damage to the system.

P.S.: Right now it's running at 52ºC because I have it in "Low-Power" mode...

P.S.S.: By the way, if I send it in, do I really have to do a back-up?, I mean, I really don't know how I'm going to get 190 Gb out of here... Shouldn't be necessary though, should it? Changing a Fan doesn't affect the hard drive...

My vaio 31H starts with 40Degrees and then raises to 55degree in a short time and stays there.
When I check back side of my laptop , it is incredibly hot to me , does 55 a reasonable temperature for my laptop or not ?
