Hello all,

Greetings!

This is my first post here. Wonder if anyone here can help me with this, I tried looking up stuff in the manual, but can't seem to find info aboaut it anywhere.

My Norton antivurs programme has a back up facilty as well, and when trying to configure it, it asks me to go to the Start / Execute / type in cmd / type in some code in a window. The code includes a tilde symbol which is not present on my keyboard as the computer was bought in Italy and instead of the tilde being on one of the keys, it has accented vowels like àùèìé. How do I access this symbol to type in the code?

TVMIA (Thanks very much in advance!)

PS My computer model is Vaio VGN FE 11H

Well, doing this gives me a tilde, but high up in the air, not mid way like how a dash is positioned. When I typed in the code using this tilde it gave me "access denied", so does ANYONE know how to get the tilde at dash level?

Pretty please?

The other thing you could try is to change your keyboard layout from "Italian" to "Italian (142)".

As far as I can see all the main keys are the same but you can then get a ~ by pressing 'AltGr' and '+'. Presumably at the moment you will get ']'.

'+' is the key two to the right of 'p' and one to the left of 'Enter'.

Just curious as to why it would appear differently in this case though.

Just an update -

My computer evidently had very severe problems, more than just not accepting the tilde, and it went completely nuts* shortly after so I took it back to the shop where I bought it and it was still under guarantee so they sent it off to Sony for me and told me it would take a minumum of thirty to thirty five days before I heard anything. Ack!

Looking around the shop, I came across this VGN-N38Z on sale for 799 Euros, discounted, I believe, from around 1199 Euros. It was the last piece, the display model in fact, and I had the sudden brainwave (duh!) of having two pcs so as to always have something in working order (God willing!). I bought it on the spot and only had to give the keys a rub down with a damp cloth to get them clean and dust free again, and voilà, a great new computer! Now I have a small "stable" of computers.

*Ok, some of the problems - when switched on, after the VAIO logo there was a constant beeping, which stopped when I pressed the return carriage thingy twice. Then, when the password window came up it would go mad and strings of dots would appear by themselves. Afer toggling between the two user accounts, I would get it to calm down enough to type in my password. Sometimes it wouldn't accept a certain vowel and then I would be asked it I had forgotten my password, and on and on...grrr. Can anyone tell me what the likely problem was? At least, what SORT of problem was it? My Norton Anitvirus protection was up to date. Maybe my Windows updates were not bang up to date. I never open email attachments from unknown senders. Any general advice for keeping safe?

Thanks once again.

Hi Psued,

The Vaio has obviously been used so I suggest you do a complete Recovery back to factory settings - you just don't know what has been done to it so start from where you would if it had not been used!!!!!

Connect to the mains electricity adapter. Turn on your Vaio and tap F10 repeatedly when you see the first Vaio screen. This will start the recovery wizard which will allow you to select a Complete Recovery to Factory Settings. Do not interrupt the Recovery even if it appears to have stopped.

Next, make your Recovery DVDs (Use 3 DVD±R Discs) by going to Start -> Vaio Recovery Utility and choosing to make a Media Recovery Kit.

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. I haven't come across any problems yet though, the ones I was describing were on my old computer...

OK, one thing I have noticed on BOTH computers is that when I am moving the cursor across the screen from right to left using the touch pad, sometimes it causes the browser window to revert to the previous window, like clicking the "go back a page" button. Anyone else find this, and can it be overcome?
