Luisarn is right - 512MB was good in 2005!

Fortunately RAM is much cheaper than in 2005. Most of us here use Crucial because they guarantee compatibility with your Vaio.

A 2GB set (2 X 1GB sticks) will cost you £22.99 (Sony memory would have cost you about £500 in 2005)

Have a look here: -

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=VAIO%20VGN-A517%20Series

After looking at the specs of your machine I am surprised to see that it does in fact only come with 512MB of ram. This is small by today's standards - and for the money you paid. Fortunately ram is cheaper than it's ever been. The max ram for your machine is 2GB (that's probably 2 x 1GB sticks). If you invest in more ram you will definitely notice an improvement in speed.

This model was released in 2005 and at that time you even don't have core duo processors.
So 512MB of RAM wasn't bad at all for that time.
Maybe you should consider upgrading to a new VAIO?
The FW series is nice machine

Hi angus1878,

Crucial normally deliver within a couple of days.

Most people usually do it themselves - the only thing to be careful of is static electricity. Make sure you earth yourself before you start and then touch a metal part of the Vaio chassis before trying to handle and inset the memory modules.

One module goes in a compartment in the bottom and the second goes under the keyboard.

There are very comprehensive and clear instructions on pages 147 to 156 of your User Guide. You can download the whole Guide (which is for both A-Series and FS_Series)from here: -

ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Manuals/Notebooks/A5_FS3/A5_FS3_H_EN.pdf

Good Luck
