I have a number of Adobe (Acrobat, Flash player, Reader) and Java (Runtime Environment etc) programs installed on my laptop. There are 12 in all and I am trying to 'clean up' the laptop to gain a little extra space. I suspect that as these applications update they do not automatically delete their previous versions.
Am I allowed to list the 12 items here so that someone can advise which ones I can safely delete?
Thanks,
Gyron

Hi Gyron,

There are at least two that you can delete from that list but before we go any further can you please run Secunia Online Software Inspector.

After clicking Start Scanner uncheck display only insecure programs before running the online inspector and report back. A screenshot of the results would help.

If you don’t have a screen capture program I suggest that you try the freeware version of Gadwin PrintScreen 4.3 freeware

Click HERE to download - it is at the bottom of the page.

Hi Rich912,

Thanks for advice. My laptop is able to take screenshots, so that bit was easy.

The information obtained from the Secunia scan entailed 5 screen shots on 3 pages of MS Word, how do I attach the file to my reply please - sorry to be dim! I have ticked the 'I would like to attach a file' box but after that??

The information regarding lack of MS security updates is not surprising since I have auto updates surpressed since I already have Internet Security operating and do not wish any conflicts. There is a lot of info regarding the file in question.

Kind regards,

Gyron

Hi Gyron,

I see that you managed to attach the file.

As you point out there are a number of Microsoft security updates missing. I know of no reason why these updates would cause conflicts with any Internet Security software that you are using. The choice is yours but I would pay a visit to Windows Update.

Moving on down the list:

Adobe Reader 7 – I suggest that you update this as recommended.

Adobe Flash Player – My preferred method of dealing with outdated and duplicate version of this is to download the latest version and save the file to the Desktop. Then download the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller from here:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Run this and then install the latest version.

Sun Java – you should find all the installed versions of this in Add/Remove programs. The most recent version of this is usually at the top of the list which in your case is 6 update 7. I would first install 6 update 15 and then remove the rest.

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

I hope that this is of some help.

Hi Gyron

The majority of the problems listed by Secunia should be sorted by a visit to Windows update.

The three exceptions are:

1 Acrobat Reader – follow the link provided by Secunia and update the software.

2 Adobe Flash Player – follow my instructions for removal and then install latest version. You should then only have one version on your system.

3 Sun Java – Follow my instructions regarding installing latest version and then go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and scroll down to Sun Java. You can safely remove all versions other than version 6 update 15.
i.e. delete:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5 (118MB)
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 (119MB)
Java (TM) 6 Update 7 (114MB)
Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 (134MB)

Once you have done all of the above run the Secunia scanner again. If there are still problems then let us know.

Good luck.
