I have this problem over my wireless network. I found some temporary solutions when I want to dump a lot of stuff on my laptop before I travel but it always reverts back to the error message you posted and I've given up trying to find a permanent fix. Most forums blame Norton Internet Security. There are also some issues regarding TCP/IP protocols not being installed by default in SP2 (see properties in network connections).

Here are my temp fixes which are independent of each other and not really a satisfactory long term solution.

i) turn off firewalls on both PCs
ii) uninstall NIS on both PCs (I've had to do this when (i) stopped working)
iii) disallow sharing on your networked folders and then turn it back on again. This normally buys me 20 minutes of file transfer before the problem comes back.

I do suspect that NIS is the problem, but it has a networking feature so it shouldn't cause this problem.

Before I finally gave up on this completely, I googled the error message and spent many days researching forums.

Sorry, not really a helpful post, but this is a well known and not well solved problem.
