Life on Mars?

Mars One

Has anyone else heard about this? Of course it wll never work but its a heck of an idea.

(Apart from the fact its a one-way ticket.)

I know I shouldn't laugh but you have to love the visionaries that come up wth these ideas.

Ive heard of the project, and would apply - but cant be bothered. 2023 is not a realistic timeframe in my oppinion.

Where does one apply for a Mars passport? And crucially, who stamps it at the end destination ! Is Duty free available?

Also what happens if they don't let you in? As there's no return journey do you have to hover in space?

The Americans would try to slap a flag on Mars and claim its thiers. And everyone would have to submit to an anti-terrorism interigation before entering Mars. The NSA would be slurping all the data as possible and then sell it onto GCHQ.

I did like the movie - but have to sadly disagree on the soundtrack (not to my taste). I do love the theme music to Game Of Thrones though

Back on topic I read that if an astronaut was to go to Mars they would accumulate two thirds of their total lifetime allowance of radiation on one journey.

This headline on CNN made me laugh - I don't think they realised quite how it reads

How long would it take and how much would be delivery for a Sony telly on Mars ? Cripes, I wouldn't want to receive a faulty one and have to arrange a courier pick up - probably better to fix it yourself

Well..... We could work this out

It costs roughly $10,000 per pound to put an object into orbit. 2.2lb to the KG = $22,000.

Lets assume this is Geostationary Orbit which is 22,236 miles (above equator). Mars is 33,900,000 miles from Earth at its closest point. Therefore Mars is 1,524 times the distance of the Earth geostationary orbit.

Cost per KG to Mars = $22,000 x 1,524 = $33,528,000

Sonys 65" 2014 4K TV (KD-65X9005B) is 46.6KG with stand.

Cost to send KD-65X9005B to Mars is US$1,562,404,800 or £1,010,576,454 (at current prices)

(Anyone want to check my Math?)

Edit:

All of this assumes that the cost is constant throughout the full journey (ie cost is the same to leave earths gravity all the way to mars). Cost would drop significantly after leaving Earths orbit/gravity (cannot find resources to know how much by though)

Not sure what the gravity is on Mars but I think it's less than here so at least it should be cheaper to send back ?

Regarding the duration of the journey that's another matter - I 've found that UPS are good at next day delivery

Thats a very good point about the gravity!

I think that with the right trajectory plotted it may be possible to just throw the TV back.

I demand serious research starts immediately into whether an underarm or overarm delivery is needed to break the atmosphere.
