Ill tell you about my story and programming

I was first interested in programming when I was about 10ish. Had a Commodore 64, and found a couple of programming books at a local car-boot sale (or Swap Meet as it was called). So I had a good dabble at that, not creating anything, just playing.

About 13ish, I did create my own (all be it crappy) game in Windows 3.1 using a program called Click-and-Play. A scrolling space-ship shooter.

In high school, I was taught a few basics of programming, using the language of Pascal. Thinking about it today, and its actually a really good 'learning' language. (or was)

After that, I went to college and did a general IT course for the next 4 years, but specialised in programming. This was the turning point for me. I loved programming, but I had a really rotten couple of lecturers (who knew jack). This turned me off. I did learn the basics of C++, SQL, Java though. But the seed was sown. I also couldnt see myself doing this for the next 40 years

So Its been 15+ years now, forgotten most of the coding, but still know the basic principles and theories.

I have been thinking about teaching myself, but unsure. Its come along way since then, no longer a couple 100/1000 lines. Even webpage design. Anyone remember Geocities and all the crappy pages on there. One of them was mine

Today is International Programmers Day so i thought it would be a good time to get your thoughts on all things codeable.

Do we have any programmers in the community? Or just coding amateurs? Have any of you tried to make your own app?

Closest i got was starting to create an app aimed at students to help control their budget. But it's been in the very early stages for years now

Some apps that i find useful:

Citymapper - London bus and tube timetables, plus general directions and a "Get me home" button that i have found useful on more than one occasion.

Endomondo - App for tracking runs, creating routes and beating personal bests.

And my favourite game, atm is Hill Climb Racing.

Do you have any apps or games that others might find useful?

Quinnicus, your story sounds so familiar to mine. I did a bit f programming in Pascal and Java, but most of my tutors and lecturers never really explained how to do it. So yes, I did do bits of programming - but I never really got where I wanted to.

A few years ago I did a project at the Open University called a running app, it was for runners of their club. I used App Inventor from MIT and it really was very helpful in helping me work through how code should work.

Great topic guys, at the moment I don't really have many favourite apps on iOS or Android - except for the TV guide
