A VERY quick reply from Sony Support, I have simply cut and pasted their reply below (in short, no chance, I may pop into Carphone Warehouse and see if the can do anything). They seemed to have ignored me mentioning the fact that people (like you) have sent in their WHITE phones, only to get them back in the same unresolved condition in which you sent it !!

Dear Bobby,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.

We are sorry to hear of the issues that you are having with your Sony Xperia Z5 Compact lagging, freezing and turning off.

We can advise the Sony Limited Warranty covers all manufacturing faults that may occur on your handset and will last for a period of 24 months from the original date of purchase. If during the warranty period your product fails to operate under normal use and service due to a manufacturing fault then your handset will need to be sent to our authorised service centre to be examined under the terms and conditions of the warranty.

This warranty does not cover any failure of the product due to normal wear and tear or due to misuse, including but not limited to use in other than the normal and customary manner in accordance with the Sony instructions for use and maintenance of the product. Nor does this warranty cover any failure of the product due to accident, software or hardware modification/adjustment, acts of God or damage resulting from liquid.

Please note that if the damage is not covered by the Sony Limited Warranty, there is a fee of £21.80 to have your product returned should you not accept the estimated costs for repair or if it is not possible to carry out any repair. We would not be able to offer a replacement handset, if this is something that you would be looking for we would recommend to get in touch with your point of sale to see if they could help you further.

From the issues that you have described we would suggest that you send your handset to our service location to be examined by our authorised service engineers. However, please note the below information only applies to handsets which have been purchased within the UK. If your handset was purchased outside the UK then you would need to contact the support centre in that region.

To book your handset in for repair please visit the following link:

http://mysupport.sonymobile.com/global-en/#/support

You will then be asked to either login with or create a Sony account. If you do not already have an account you can create one or sign in via Facebook or using Google+.

Once your account has been created select ‘My Products’ to register your device. Once you have registered your handset, please select ‘Repair your device’ and you will be guided through the repair process.

If you would like to track the status of your repair once your handset is sent off, please login your account and select My Orders which will provide you with the status of your handsets repair.

For the latest news, information and product support please visit www.sonymobile.com.

If you require any further assistance then please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Hi @bardakson

Please, try to boot your device into safe mode as explained in the link below and check if this issue persists. If everything works ok in this mode, a third party app its creating this problem.

http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/How-to-boot-your-phone-into-safe-mode/m-p/348008#U348008

Hi @davekk @Perty @madskaae

I suggest you to first run a backup of the device information. Then try performing a system repair using PC Companion or Bridge for MAC. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 80% battery. Switch off your phone and unplug from Pc (Hold volume up and power for around 10 seconds) Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the on screen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP.

Hi @xavinux,

Unfortunately that did not help. Maybe for a while but the problem is back. It seems to happen more often when the phone is busy installing apps or if I'm doing something resource demanding such as browsing heavy web pages
