Hi,

On my current phone a xperia z I like to stream content to my w905 bravia TV.

This works well and should work better with a z3 compact because that phone is MHL 3.0.

Recently though, I found out that the screen of the z3 compact is only 720p.

Will this phone be able to stream 1080p through MHL?

Im also a bit worried that the MHL on a compact size phone may work less, specially when streaming.

Before I buy the Z3 compact I have to know how it behaves in MHL mode.

Any insights on this matter would be greatly appriciated.

regards,

Gert-Jan Lint

To clarify, the output is 1080p if your TV supports it but i believe it may upscale the phones display to that resolution.

Offcourse the tv support 1080p,

If what you say is true it would be shame really.

xperia z3 compact is advertized as being MHL3.0, whats the use for MHL3.0 if you cant upscale to 1080p.

To makes things clear I would like to know if a 1080p movie on a 720p display(xperia z3 compact) is streamed to MHL in 1080p.

The orgininal content would be 1080p, there is no need to downscale, it would be be only for the 720p display on the phone.

I've already forwarded this internally for more information but as you are mirroring the phones display i suspect it's 720p being upscaled to 1080p. Not sure if certain apps can output the videostream without any scaling for the phones display but i'll let you know as soon as i hear anything.

' As for the TV output it depends on the resolution/quality of the original content. If you are just generally mirroring your phone screen it will have a resolution of 720p on the TV (which itself is a very decent quality, most content on TV is 720p anyways). But playing back a high quality 1080p or 4K (the Sony Z3 Compact supports 4K video recording) video from phone, it will be displayed as Full HD on the TV.'

This a quote frim xda developpers, I dont know this person but he states the Z3 compact can output 1080p in MHL.

I really need someone to check this for me.

I've tested it here and if you play a 1080p video using Video, it's not downscaled and upscaled again. You get 1080p on MHL without any scaling. But if the content you're viewing in the phone is not 1080p (for example general mirroring of apps like Chrome), the output on MHL is 720p upscaled to 1080p (the phone still outputs 1080p but it's upscaled to that resolution).

It's not MHL 3.0. That's why i wrote that i'm not able to test it with MHL 3.0.

The cable you link to is not a Sony Mobile product so i'm afraid i don't have one as i only work with Sony Mobile products. But to test it i would also need a TV with MHL 3.0. The cable itself doesn't provide any power so i would need a TV with MHL 3.0 as well to see how fast it charges.

But i don't think you'll see any battery drain if you have a TV and cable that supports MHL 3.0 and watch a movie.

Using adapter mentioned above you can keep charging in most situations when 2 Amp charger is used. The only situation I got power loose was when MX Player was used with software decoder.

You can also change output resolution by using diagnostics menu. Useful to force 30fps full HD or 60 fps 720p, because phone selects 1080p24 if available.
