I've just received a notification that a system update to 4.4.4 KitKat is available, but that I need a computer to perform the update.

Has anyone managed to get PC Companion running succesfully under WINE?

My PC is running Linux Mint 17 and, while PC Companion will run using WINE, it won't recognise when I've attached the phone; instead the PC brings up a file explorer window indicating it's recognised it as an MP3 player.

Not heard of anyone doing it - Your best method would be to use a Windows based system - But I am intrigued as to how a Linux system recognises flashmode as MP3 player

Using a Windows machine would require I buy a new computer. Not really worth it for a software update.

I'm sure there'll be someone with a Windows machine, but I know nothing about the process involved in the update.

If files from my phone are copied across to someone else's machine, how would that affect any privacy clauses for any software I may have installed (in particular internet banking software), if that information is compromised somehow whilst on the other person's computer.

If they're copied across encrypted and then wiped after being copied back, then that's a different matter.

The irony here is that a Linux-based operating system, apparently, cannot currently be updated using a Linux-based PC.

Nothing is copied across - It's a case of installing the PCC then connecting your phone and if an update is available you will see a notification at the top then you simply follow the instructions but no files are copied to the Pc from your phone

That's the information I was looking for, Thommo.

I didn't know if it backed everything up, before doing the update (which is the first thing I do when installing a new operating system on a PC), or not.

Time to find someone I know who's

a) got a Windows PC

and

b) at home today.

Cheers.

Hi same topic but slightly different problem, system won't update on windows!

My phone actually already has this update and is running. Despite this the Z1 still finds itself with a message to update when it already has the update??? baffled to say the least:smileyshocked:
