Whenever I would like to disconnect my phone from my computer, I am unable to find my phone from the "safely remove hardware" section. Is it safe to just unplug my phone or is there something else I can do to disconnect my phone safely? I am using win 7 and sony PC companion 2.1.

Thanks!

If you have the internal memory connected, you should get that option.Change the USB connection mode to MTP.

my usb is in MTP mode, but it still not listed in the safely removed list. It only shows up as a portable device. According to some windows articles, it is not necessary to "safely remove" portable device as long as no operation is going on. Is this true?

Yes,but it is a good caution to do that.Still strange though, have you tried to reinstall PCC?Do you have a PIN or password for the device?

A feature of Windows since the days of XP allows you to disconnect usb devices without causing any harm to either devices - You can turn this feature off but by default it is on - So unplugging your phone will cause no consequential harm
