I've just downloaded that and tried it, my battery is currently at 70%. Whenever I press the volume down button and connect the lead, the L.E.D flashes red once then green once and then nothing happens, it doesn't even charge or turn back on while connect and the computer doesn't register that it's connected

Phone / Tablet Software Update

5. Press and hole the volume down key on the phone while plugging the USB cable into your phone

For the past 3 hours I have been trying to do this, my phone is at 100% battery and is 2 weeks old. I have followed all of the steps but yet for some reason when ever I do this one nothing at all seems to happen. I was informed by Sony to follow these steps to try and fix my phone as I cannot receive SMS. If anyone could please give me any advice on how to resolve this it would be greatly appreciated... I am using the Xperia Z1

Try sony update service:

http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/update-service/

With SUS,you need the phone turned off and charged to at least 60%.

I had a problem with this first time and note that when I tried a second time I pressed the down volume button and held it down, then inserted the usb while still holding it down, and continued to hold it down for at least a couple more seconds. Then the pc companion software recognised the action and took over. First time I did not keep the button pressed after inserting the usb. If it doesn't work I seem to recall the screen gives you an instruction on how to manually progress. Good luck and I hope you get it working soon. On a side note there is a forum member.(starts all his comments with."hello dear "!) who recommends if you are having some phone issues after update then let your phone power run down below 10% and turn off. Change fully while off and try again. He/she recons it sorted the problems with his z1.

ROSSI, just confirming you do have the phone switched off when you are carrying out the step you described? I do recognise the description for repair only.

Only just seen your comment, if it doesn't continue to work I will try and let it run below 10%, I only did the update for it yesterday before I tried all of this. Thanks for the tip

Ok so I let my phone drop below 10% and turn off and charge fully while off. I then tried to follow the steps once again and didn't get anywhere. I downloaded another version of sony update service and tried once again only to fail. For some reason my phone just doesn't want to do anything when holding in the volume down button. I really want to find a different solution other than sending it off for repair
