Hi, I have been using the phone for the past 2 days and realised that it heats up pretty quickly. It was particularly hot at the top part of the back of the phone, the area where the NFC logo is located. I did several "tests" to see how fast it heats up, and I made sure that the phone was cooled down before each try.

Firstly, I used the phone for browsing the internet for about 15mins and realised that the temperature(battery) has risen to 43 degrees celsius. Next, I tried using its camera and took several shots and after about 5 minutes of use, the temperature has also risen to 44.2 degrees and the a message was prompted stating something like "the temperature is too high! camera needs to turn off." I then tested the video recording in 4K resolution. The recording lasted for only about 3mins 40secs before the message was prompted, and the recording was not saved. The temperature rose to 44.5 degree celsius.

I understand that the automatic shut off of the camera was to prevent any hardware damage from the high temperature. However 15 mins of browsing and less than 5 minutes of 4k recording does not appear satisfactory from a user's point of view, especially after the device being touted as the best Sony has built. I hope that a software update can help mitigate this issue, as it will be a huge hindrance to the day to day usage if the issue remains. Does anyone else have the same issue?

I've seen that once with my Xperia Z1 and twice with my Xperia S, if you are running a lot of apps, or syncing quite a bit of accounts/services/apps and its a hot day and/or you have been using your phone for quite a bit of time it will get hotter and hotter so it is normal, now, this could also mean that you have an app running in the background that its creating this problem, restart your phone on safe mode and check again, if not you could re-install the latest update with SUS or PCC

Hi uliwooly, thanks for the suggestions. I upgraded from a Xperia S too, which had overheating issues too. I took your advice and re-updated the latest firmware, rebooted it in safe mode and retry. However, the same issues persist, the camera seems to last a bit longer but 4k recording still doesnt cross the 4 minute mark. Can anyone else give it a try and see if its a widespread occurence or maybe its just the handset i got. Thanks!

I don't know about the latest limit set by google but earlier it was 2GB . Means your phone can't create any video file over 2gb. Nor you can transfer any 2gb file to your phone from PC or vice a versa.

So see the size of 4K file if it's near 2gb or something.

Regarding heating problem, it's quite normal. This phones packs 2.3GHZ quad core with 5.2 dispaly. It's quite power consuming.

Things should get better with time though, Z2 is fairly new even in terms of software. There will be several updates that will make the phone better and better.

the files were roughly 1.3gb or so. to update the issue, i have tried display sets in my local sony centres and they came up with the same problems. I understand that 4K recording is not a pressing issue since the number of 4k displays arent that popular yet. But, the limited use of the camera to 5-10 mins pose a problems to users who frequently take photos for work or leisure.

Hi,

I think it must have been set due to some reason if it exists in all models you tested. If it's a problem, it would be fixed by providing software updates in future.

I've checked this and 4K capture can make significant demands on your phone's processor, memory and battery life.

For the best experience, it's recommended that you install a high capacity SD card (Xperia Z2 can take a card up to 64GB) and shoot 4K video in short bursts of no longer than a few minutes at a time. Longer recordings in 4K may give you this message.

Thanks for the reply. But with all due respect, I do not see how that is the best experience.

The world’s best camera and camcorder in a waterproof smartphone*

How can it possibly be? when the phone is advertised as such?

A recording that last less than 5 minutes does not seem to be a reasonable duration to me. I have mentioned before that the 4k recording is in fact a secondary issue, the primary being the same limited usage occuring when I am using the camera for a period of 5-10 minutes. I frequently use the camera function for work and most of the time I take shots over a extended period for about 15 minutes. I admit I am no expert in researching in the average user's usage of smartphone cameras, but 5-10 minutes again does not seem to be reasonable. (But I would also like to stress that users-like myself, who paid a premium for a flagship phone like the Z2 would expect a little more than it just meeting the average usage)

Responses from this forum shows that high heat is a prevalent issue for smart phones, which I readily agree with. It is an issue identified across all brands at varying degrees. This then begs the question, are new models put through performances test in which they are determined to meet some required standards? I would definitely believe that they were. But similar issues are recurring on new models released, which are then fixed or mitigated through subsequent software updates. I do still believe that Sony can solve the issue, but having read the official reply; it sounded like it is just the way it is and we are to make do with what it has to offer - that took away some of the expection and confidence I had on the company.

I am sure many of you think that I am overly picky or I am just trying to find fault or I might be some other brand's fan whos just trying to bash Sony, I assure you that I took time and effort in making my case as a consumer and an avid follower of Sony products. At the end of the day, whether if this issue is resolved or not, I will still be using the Z2 as I do appreciate its other details and capabilities. It is a great phone, but I am just trying to reason that it can be better. Thanks for reading, cheers.

I only find this documented for 4K capture. It can of course happen also when taking photos or recording in lower resolutions depending on ambient temperature and other apps running using CPU and battery.
If you also notice this when taking photos and recording in lower resolutions, could you please give me some more information about when this happens (ambient temperature, color of your phone, are you out in the sun) and i will forward this internally.

Does it also happen when the phone is in safe mode (http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/How-to-boot-your-phone-into-safe-mode/m-p/348008#U348008)? By using safe mode you can see if you have installed apps running in the background which may cause this.
The phones goes through rigorous testing but as you say, high performance smartphones will generate heat when used and the phone has safety features protecting it from overheating. If the phone is used in high ambient temperature of left in the sun it may in combination with demanding apps and features give you a message about heat and then the phone will turn off functions or the phone itself to protect it.

Hi, I have tried it when the phone is booted to safe mode (read posts 2-4). I am using the black xperia z2 and the photos and videos were taken indoors at night, the ambient temperature was about 25-27 degrees celsius.
