I have a Z1 Compact on Three UK network, running Android 4.3. In Update Centre (on the phone), I have notifications for new apps, updates and system updates(JellyBean to KitKit). If I go into settings in Update Centre, Network Settings is greyed out. This means I am unable to untick the box that says "Update via WiFi only", so I cannot do any updates via OTA, only via WiFi.

I have reset my APN settings for three.co.uk and still no joy.
Had an online live chat with Sony CS and they have no idea or suggestions. Went into Three
store and they too have no ideas.

Three do allow OTA updates, since my last mobile was with them and I was able to do system
updates OTA.

I know that updates from JB to KK tend to be phased and not released at same time as I have
a Nexus7 and Google did the KitKat update via WiFi first, then OTA.

Anyone on here heard of problems like this before, or have any suggestions or answers? Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

If the option is greyed out it's unfortunately not available for your unit. This function may vary depending on customization and etc.

I suggest that you connect to a Wi-Fi network if you wish to update through OTA, otherwise you can connect your phone to a computer to update your phone:

It's a Sony problem. Have asked a Three UK store who have staff who know what they are on about. It is a Sony inconsistentcy.Sony Corporation allow updates of their apps that appear on Google Play, those updates or apps far larger than those that appear in Update Centre. So the question is aimed at Sony. Thanks for your comments, wish I could get an answer from Sony.

Hi,

I'm not trying to put the blame on any one here but the fact is that in some operator software customizations, it's not possible to update via OTA through the mobile network. Only through Wi-Fi or using a computer.

If you don't have access to a computer or a Wi-Fi network I would suggest that you contact your retailer/store where you purchased your phone to see if they can help you update your phone.

You can also contact your local Xperia support team to see if you can get in touch with a service centre that can help you update your phone:

http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/

It is nothing to do with operator customised software. I understand the point about OTA updates for system operating software, Jelly Bean to KitKat. It is about a Sony app update or new Sony app, pushed via the phones Update Centre. For example, a new app called Tasks. This apps allows data etc to be synchronised with Exchange accounts. This app is showing as 0.5 meg size.Yet my phone will not allow me to install it any other way apart from Wifi. This is what I am about.
Have double checked with my mobile operator and they say it is Sony that is preventing the Ota download and updates of these small apps.
My question stands. Why is Sony doing this and is there a work round to this?

So is it ok for Sony to just ignore questions they can't give a satisfactory answer to? From reading this forum, Sony representatives, refuse to answer or comment on the difficult questions.

I have never encountered this kind of limitations in generic software but please provide me with your SI number (XXXX-XXXX) of your phone and I will check if this is actually some restriction made by us or if it is requested by any operator for their own customization.

To check your SI number go to the service menu.

Service menu can be accessed by entering *#*#7378423#*#*.
