Windows Explorer Hangs as soon as xperia z connects

Whenever I connect my xperia z to any pc/laptop over usb cable (mostly MTP mode) or wifi. It hangs the PC or takes too long to perform any file operation. So much so, that in the end I either have to end the task or reboot the PC (or sometimes plugging out the usb cable also frees the PC).

I've a 32 GB Class 10 Sandisc SD Card and Sony Vaio Win7 Ultimate SP1 64bit windows with 4 GB Ram 2.2 GHz Dual Core.
Have tried reinstalling the OS.

Cable can't be faulty because the same it does with Wifi connectivity also.

it could be your antivirus trying to scan everything on your phone

I'll try and let you know. Currently after disabling the Avast, it does seem to be working.

I'll check it throughout the day. Hope I don't forget to mark the answer as a 'Solution'. I don't want to be ungrateful (though I know I'm much forgetful).

Sorry, but it didn't solve the problem, though initially it did seem to have some effect. But ultimately problem is exactly as it was. When I connect, it keeps on trying to search the phone properly and hangs in the end.

Do you really have some other idea?

Like uliwooly says, it does sound like something is trying to scan the phone.

Does this happen both in MSC- and MTP-mode?

What if you connect the phone in MTP-mode but without the SD card?

In 90% of the cases, it hangs the pc when I'm connected over MTP or Xperia's wifi method (in which xperia's both- internal card and exrternal sd card- appear in windows explorer by the phone name).

But rarely happened when connected in Mass Storage mode (in which case the external sd chip in mobile becomes a drive letter in the win 7 explorer). If I dismount the external chip from settings or physically take it out, then also the case is same. Though at one time it did seem to have some effect, but ultimately, proved the same.

@zopfan,

Maybe you should temporarily uninstall Avast or disable it into Safe Mode through "Services" and then check again, just to be sure.

Some anti-viruses can be completely disabled only from the Safe Mode!

Boot into Safe Mode > Start button > Search programs and files bar > Services >after that find and disable Avast (Apply +OK) > Reboot your laptop.

Try this and see if the problem persists.

Thought i bump this thread had the same problems, first i tried a factory reset, that allowed me to at least open the the device in explorer, but then it hung again.

Then I tried to do a selective boot from msconfig, where I removed avg(my antivirus) from the startup menu and the avg related services in services menu. This made it work flawless but on the down side that I cant run any antivrus while I transfer files, and have to reboot when ever im done or want to add files again.

Dont know if the problem lies on the phone or the antivirus programs but Im guesing that the on-acces malvare scaning in any ativirus causes this problem, had the same problem when using bit-defender but have simply bypassed the problem by using wifi sharing apps.

[Summary] SD card removal fixed my issue

Hello Sony Xperia Support

I have had this issue since Windows 10. I believe the issue lies there as I never experienced it previously

If you connect it brings up the dialog to charge or select a different mode; if you charge its fine

If you either select Mass Storage Mode or attempt to Tether then the issues begin

If you select Mass Storage Mode then test, try again, again, again, eventually it will work

If you Tether the issue persists however the internet access works (currently I am experiencing the issue and posting this comment via the connection)

I will attempt various solutions until this is resolved; I don't wish to factory reset as I have read that doesn't work. I will attempt disabling AVAST. I have attempted safe mode and no success

EDIT:

I removed the SD card and it now works fine for Mass Storage Mode however there is a slight delay in opening Network and Sharing Center, and Network Connections on Windows 10 which is not a problem. I will format the card eventually and provide feedback on whether it was only the SD card or perhaps the contents there on
