How can I force marshmallow update without PC connection?

I have had to revert to using an old z3c which is still running lollipop 5.0.2 as I've not used it since the marshmallow update.

My issue is that it refuses to update to marshmallow. If I ask it to check for a software update it just tells me that it's all up to date. I did a factory reset but it hasn't helped. There is loads of free space so that's not the problem.

I decided to connect to pc and update via Xperia companion, but the device is not recognised by the computer.

Whether I connect with phone switched on or off, it shows as charging but pc doesn't recognise it. Have tried 3 different pcs and a whole variety of cables with no joy so pretty sure issue is with phone not computer. Tried a software repair but can't do that either since it's not recognised by the pc.

Is there any way I can force the phone to update to marshmallow without needing to connect to pc, given that the phone believes itself to be up to date?

I have the same problem but with a kit-kit (4.4.4). Did you find a solution to this problem?
