Hi @JJ747, welcome to our forum and I'm sorry to hear about this.

Is this something that you have started to notice very recently, for example after updating your device or installing a new application?

To start with I would recommend that you test the microphone outside of a call to see if you are able to hear your own voice when the recording is being played. You can do this test in Settings > About phone > Diagnostics > Test > Microphone.

If you aren't able to hear your own recording being played in the second part of the test, try rebooting your phone in safe mode and do the test again when downloaded applications are disabled.

If you can hear your voice, you can try and change the preferred network mode in your device. To do that, go to Settings > More > Mobile networks > Preferred network type > Only GSM.

Let me know how it goes!

Hi Sony.

On my Xperia Z5 Compact (only two months old) the microphone doesn't seem to work in calls.
Usually a restart works, but I cannot do that prior to answering the phone, rendering only a solution for when I a) am going to make an outgoing call b) have the time to reboot the device.

It seems to be some kind of software crash, and weirly enough I can record sound in the Easy Voice Recorder app while this problem occurs.
I have tried the following:
- Tests in the 'about' section. The phone passes the microphone test
- Disabling the 'OK Google'-thingy which I read elsewhere can block the use of the microphone (???!)

- Of course turning the phone off and back on

How do I resolve this issue so that my phone works as a phone and not just as a mini tablet?

With kind regards
Troels-Henrik Krag
Xperia Z5 Compact

If you can't do that, try and adjust the preferred network type to GSM only to see if that makes any difference.

You can this setting in Settings > More > Mobile networks > Preferred network type > GSM only.

Let me know how it goes!

The solution became to change the standard phone app. It simply seems that (parts of) the Sony phone app crashes, rendering the microphone useless in the app.
How weird is that?

Anyway, I've found a solution and that's fine.
But I am, of course, puzzled that Sony has chosen to write their own, faulty app when Google provides one that works, NQA.

Well.
I thought I had it fixed by changing phone app, but no.
The microphone just somehow stops working after a while.
A restart will fix it for at while, but that's highly inconvenient - especially when I want to be able to receive calls.

What could possible be wrong?

With kind regards
Troels-Henrik

Hi.
I have tried that, yes.

When the problem occurs, Easy Voice Recorder will come up with an error message - something like "Couldn't access microphone" or something similar.

I have recently tried deleting all cache on the phone and for two days I have not experienced the problem. Whether it is resoved remains to be seen.

If it isn't - what should be my next step?
