Yeah - if under warranty - always use official methods. That is always the best option.

Yesterday my Xperia Z5 told me that it had an update, so I downloaded it and accepted the device's suggestion of allowing an auto update overnight. This morning it seemed to be working but mysteriouslly had no phone connection so I told the device to restart. That was the last time I got my phone to respond. Now I just have a blank black screen and no amount of pressing the on/off button or even the reset button next to the SIM card has any effect.

I am posting this for two reasons:

1- to alert others to a potential problem.

2- to see if anyone has any helpful sugestions.

Hi,

<STRIKE>If you open the side panel - where the SIM sits, there'll be a pinhole, yellow-ish colour - push that in for 20 seconds, then restart the device </STRIKE> (You've already done this)<STRIKE> </STRIKE>

If that doesn't work - charge the phone for 1 or 2 hours and perform a flash using Flashtool.

Xperiablog.net

Find your related firmware, and flash it to your device. You might want to try holding (Power + Volume Up) until the device vibrates 3 times, to see if the device will boot with normal conditions (Power Button), before you commit to Flashing with Flashtool.

There'll be prompts to follow when you start the process. You don't need to do anything special - but if the device is unresponsive - this is the best way to go. You won't have a backup of anything - and the only recoverable data will be on your SD card. The SD Card doesn't get touched at all.

Xperia Companion might be able to repair - but if it's not turning on - it won't be able to do much - which is why I suggested Flashtool.

If you manage to successfuly repair the device with Flashtool - I recommend finding an Older Firmware - like Lollipop, to downgrade, boot and complete the Welcome Screen, and then power off and Flash the Latest firmware. I've always found that the device performs so much better when I've done a large upgrade than an incremental - and I always flash to upgrade major versions - not that I had much choice because I'm rooted.

Thanks NeoBeum.

I was advised by Sony support to use Xperia Companion but as you correctly guessed. Nothing happened. 😞

I have asked them if they support the idea of Flashtool. Given that their update has trashed my phone I am looking to them to sort things out so do not want to do anything unusual that they do not first approve. Should they agreee that this is a route to go down which firmware would you recommend for an Xperia Z5 in the United Kingdom? Looking at those on offer on Xperiablog.net the only one that seems a reasonable fit is the Global Generic given that I am not clear what Central Europe 5 covers and nothing else seems close.

Thanks again for your help. I hope Sony come back with something useful soon. I had not expected one of their updates to do such a thorough job of wrecking the phone. 😞

An update for anyone who is interested.

After my phone failed to respond to Xperia Companion, Sony suggested that I should return the unit to them for repair. I have done so. Assuming that they will not charge me anything (they agree it is covered by warranty) and that they will fix it, then I am going to mark this message as the accepted solution.

If things do not work out as I expect then I may post an addition in about 2 weeks time. 😉
