Z5 Compact doesn't charge after software update

Hi,

I updated my phone today. After the update it does not charge anymore. The "bling" sound appears when I connect the phone to charger, but red light shows up only for 1 sec or does not show up at all. I tested a couple of chargers, same thing with all of them. I also started the device in safe mode and made a factory reboot, but nothing seems to help. The only way to charge it at the moment is to switch it off in reboot mode (or whatever is it called) and wait for loooong time. Blue light appears and phone charges after a long wait (an hour or so)...

Anything I can do for this? It really drives me crazy...

In this case, the best option would be to run a backup and then try performing a software repair on the device as the issue may very well be software orientated.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.

I tried to run repair via my PC, but the computer doesn't recognize phone. Green light shows up in phone, but PC gives me notification that it can't recognize the device connected to it. That means the repair program won't move on to next step, which it should do automatically after the phone is switched off and connected to computer.

Is there anything I can do by myself anymore?

Hi @alluu21,

When you run through the software repair process I suggest doing the following.

When Xperia Companion asks you to connect the device do not connect straight away, I suggest that you first press and hold the power button and the volume up key for around 10 seconds, the handset may vibrate a few times.

Once this has been done, hold down the Volume Down key and insert the USB cable into the phone DO NOT let go of the Volume Down key until Xperia Companion sees the device.

Give this a try first and let me know the results.

@Vladimirka I am not sure what you mean, are you having similar issues to @alluu21?

I have the same problem as @alluu21

the phone detects connection of the charger, but the charging will not start. charging is only possible via the computer's usb mode media device.

I am sorry to hear that.

If you have tried all of the above and still have issues with charging, you may need to test with an alternative charger of the same kind or test with another USB cable of the same like.

If this does fail, then I can only really advise that you contact customer care directly and ask to have the handset inspected.

I have the same issue and tried all the above..

This must be a software issue after the latest software update.

I don't want to send my phone to Sony for inspection, but I want Sony to come with a new update that fixes this because it's simply unacceptable.

Is it posiible to uninstall the latest update?

Ik hope your answer comes before my battery is empty, because otherwise I can't do anything anymore...

My xperia z5 have a charging issues and cannot be recognized in my PC when I connect the usb data cable. This issue occured after I downloaded and install the update in my phone. Sometimes my phone charges when connecting to the wall charger but mostly it is not charging. I've already tried several usb cables and chargers. Also I used orignal cable and charger for xperia z5 with no luck. Also my phone does not charge when connecting to a pc. I have already did a wipe cache(pressing power+volume up), factory reset twice but still the same issue

Also when connecting my phone to pc it is having error message says unreconized. I have an updated drivers and xperia companion. I tried it on all usb port of my pc and even tried to another pc but no luck. I don't know what to do I can't even use a flash tool. Please help me..

Also if you can send OTA previous update (.160) for my phone.

That's odd - my post from earlier today hasn't shown up yet. Which is a shame as it appeared to demonstrate some sort of fix. I'll wait for it to show up.

In the meantime, here's a remarkable similar symptom, which suggests a mechanical problem. Hope it isn't that.

Oh dear! My previous post disappeared. Here's what I wrote (from memory - that'll teach me to not keep copies!).

I have suffered the exact same problem. Upgrade happened a few days ago (2017-10-12 or 13 maybe). Since then fine. Well, actually didn't notice any difference, though I dare say the security fixes and enhancements were under the hood.

Imagine my surprise this morning when I dsicovered that, despite the 'phone having been plugged-in since last night, at 7am this morning it was at 30% and not charging. Obviously I immediate tried and alternative charger, cable, restarting the 'phone, turning it off...

In all cases I got the exact same symptom. Running the diagnostics (Settings --> About --> Diagnostics --> Tests --> Charging was interesting. It says "please connect charger" - when I did, it briefly changed to "charging over USB" then changed back to "please connect charger". (In correct operation it changes to "AC charger attached".

So, after leaving it for half-an-hour, in the off state I plugged it into my MacBook. To my surprise it did start charging. Then, it continued charging when plugged into the wall charger and indeed anything else. Cured! I'd hoped it might be an oddity - perhaps related to a combination of the firmware upgrade and the battery care feature (which I leave turned on - you know that thing where it delays fully-charging until just before it thinks you're going to unplug it). It makes sense that it might be as that feature deliberately stops charging when it otherwise might.

So that was the good news. I left the device charging for a while then unplugged it and went to work.

Then the bad news: At work, it was back to refusing to charge. Maybe it was coincidence that I got it working when I plugged it into my MacBook - but no amount of experimenting got it working at work, including plugging it into my Lenovo (X260).

But then at lunchtime I plugged it into a wall changer one more time and... it's charging happily. I daren't breathe for fear it stops!

It's always tempting to blame a problem on the most recent upgrade - it could equally be coincidence and it's a "dodgy connection". Sure hope it is just an oddity that can be cleared up after a few charging cycles! Otherwise, rather bad news. Though my one is still within its 2 year warranty, so I could be OK. Warranty.

That said, I haven't tried any of the other suggestions (factory reset, safe mode etc). Will try them if it goes wrong again

I experience this issue after the upgrade. Don't know what to do now but to wait for the next update via OTA and hopefully it will fix the issue
