Sony - PLEASE Unlock the MHL or USB-C to HDMI capability of the XZ Premium

I had expected that the USB-C port would allow the adapting of the video signal to HDMI, as almost every other current phone allows, especially since the XZ Premium has such state of the art video capabilities otherwise. At a minimum, an MHL adapter would allow a usable HDMI signal.

After a great deal of searching, I find that Sony has "handicapped" their premier phone offering - you can only WIRELESS-stream the video signal. I have tried this method, and the resulting picture is HORRIBLE / UNUSABLE! The contrast and resolution take a tremendous hit, and the picture becomes nothing but video lines - totally unwatchable and pathetic for a high-end phone.

This is apparently a common theme with Sony products - even their top of the line models. They have incredible features that could be implemented, but they do not "turn them on" for the user. And to do this in their most expensive offering is insulting to the users (especially the early adopters of the phones like yours truly).

Sony - take a look at the features your competitors are offering. You can't seriously think that potential customers don't look at these features and note that they are there in the phone, but willfully leave them TURNED OFF.

All of the features below could simply be turned on by an update!:
>The fingerprint scanner is there, but not implemented.

>The FM radio is there, but not implemented.

>And the superior "physical connection" Video Output is there, but not implemented.

>There are more, I am certain.

Sony - please give us these features that in truth we have paid for. This would cost you nothing, but implementing these features would show that you care about your users.
(Do you care at all? Then proove it, please!)

I love your products, but you are continuously cheating your customers unnecessarily.

Even Other OEMs have removed MHL connections on their devices. as far as I know this was removed to promeote wireless connections to promote products like google chrome cast

I want to use my phone with my Pioneer AVH 4200NEX radio over mhl. So I guess that there is no chance to make it working ....

sony far behind samsung now. i used to like Sony phones, but not anymore. waiting for Samsung s9. good luck sony. hope your engineers will wake up one day.

I used to have a perfect picture on screen mirroring but for no reason I can think of the picture quality started getting worse and worse. I have messed with the modem settings and run first time set up on the TV at least 3 times. Incredibly frustrating as EE in the uK offer free access to bt sport in one of their pay monthly packages for the xz premium. No one actually wants to watch football on a tiny screen however. The fact that we can't hard wire through hdmi is totally ridiculous. I can charge my phone through my TV with a USB cable however. (now that's functionality everyone needs). Shouldnt be surprised however with Sony's track record of restricting progress on their products.

A solution has been found in the form of a MICRO USB TO VGA/HDMI video adapter Connected to a micro USB to type c adapter completing the connection to the phone

So the HP HP Micro USB to HDMI/VGA Adapter (K2P81AA) is designed for (as per their technical docs) the HP Pro Slate 8, HP Pro Slate 12.

I looked up these devices and they are not MHL spec but in fact SlimPort (http://www.slimportconnect.com/slimport-supported-devices/). When looking at this SlimPort list there are no Sony devices listed. However cross referencing known 835 based devices against the slimport list then the Samsung Galaxy range (S8, S8+, and Note 8 US / China variants) shows they support slimport.

I have a HP K2P81AA on order, but in the mean time an old Slimport HDMI adapter through a micro USB to USB C didn't seem to work/show anything on the HDMI display not was it detected. I will update a gain one I receive my K2P81AA.

So I only just received the K2P81AA today and tried it this evening. Note my XZ Premium is a G8141 and the reason for trying this experiment is that my device suffered some electrical issue and the end result is that the display/backlight no longer works and I wanted to get external HDMI working so I could backup a few things. The device still responds to power on and power off and I can make out black text on white backgrounds if I shine a light into the display, however I can see any coloured parts of the screen using the torch method.

So I read from here: /t5/Xperia-XZ1-Compact/External-display-via-Snapdragon-835-built-in-USB-C-DisplayPort/td-p/1266634/page/3

That essentially we are using "alt Displayport" functionality and it needs to be enabled with the DisplayPort SW / app (See: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.displaylink.presenter&hl=en_GB).

With that installed remotely via a PC and allowing the handset to boot and it should automatically connect to the home wifi and install. I reboot the phone and it should be ready to plug in.

Upon doing so it seems fine, but no time at all does the HDMI display detect any device at any time. Whether this is expected (i.e. it doesn't work with this combination), or my device is more broken electrically than I think, I don't know.

All I can do now is send it away for repair or replacement and try again when the device has a visible screen.

Sorry I couldn't bring any good news.

A small update:

I have Vysor Pro installed with my Chrome browser and when connecting the device I can see Vysor opens a window and draws my phone display. I can now unlock my device and can confirm DisplayLink SW is installed but when uing the "USB 3->micro USB->HP adpater" there is no output to the HDMI monitor.

So no luck to see a display but I can now control my phone via Vysor.
