after the recent software update, my xz1 doesn't have access to Google smart lock. Although this is not a hindrance on my ability to use my phone, it is a slight inconvenience.

Probably you are right, i read yesterday about Smart Lock for Xperia C5 Ultra (i missed face lock feature in it) and foud sentence: "

The Smart Lock feature is developed by Google™ and the exact functionality may change over time due to updates from Google™", so thought maybe the same is with XZ1, coz problem was after update, but probably my guess was wrong

Try to : Go into Settings > security or Lock screen and security > Advanced > Trust agents and make sure that Smart Lock is turned on.

Then, still under settings, search for Smart Lock.
Tap Smart Lock and put in your password, unlock pattern, or pin code or use your fingerprint
