I've managed to downgrade Nougat back to Marshmallow and I couldn't believe how responsive my XZ now with 5-6hours screen on time (with 7.1 I only had 2-3 hours SOT). The only problem is the software update notification keeps on nagging, how do i hide this from the notification tray. Clearly, i am not going to upgrade to Nougat anytime as Sony (or Google) hasn't fixed the fast battery drain issues.

Unfortunately you're stuck with it, as am I who is still on Marshmallow. You would need to root in order to get rid of the notification. It should't be this way, getting nagged to 'upgrade' to a new performance-sapping o/s.
