Help!! PC companion will not work?!?

I decided to update my software on my xperia x10... so i tried to open my pc companion and remembered why i hadnt updated it before ... because the pc companion will not work! so i downloaded the pc companion again and guess what, it doesnt work.

It downloads fine and then when i try to run it, it says "you must close all programs and restart your computer before running this program". so i do this and try again and it still says "you must close all programs and restart your computer before running this program".

I have spent the last three hours resarting my computer making sure all my programs were shut.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you have rebooted your PC many times.

Can you try to reboot your PC in safe mode and try to install PC Companion again.

To reboot in safe mode, within the first few seconds of your PC restarting, press the F8 key

Hmmm.

There is another official way to update the firmware on your X10. ie the SE Update service.

Try downloading and installing this update service on your PC and perform the update.

I know this is not solving your PC Companion issue right now, but hopefully this workaround will allow you to update your phone.

Not sure if you have tried it already.

Can't think of anything else at the moment to get PC companion working on your PC.

I have the exact same problem! I use Vista Professional at work, and now it is impossible for me to use PC companion. It is very annoying!

I have tried starting up in safe mode, killing almost all processes except the ones needed to run the operating system. But the result is the same, "You must close all programs and restart your computer before running this program.".

Yes, I have done that! Mr Installation Program, can you please give me another advice on what do?

I also have Windows Vista...

I have tried everything and it just wont work!

Hi there,

It seems that your problem is related to USB not the PC Companion itself.

Unless you have enabled debug mode in your phone (settings->applications->developement) you should not need PC Companion nor any other SW on your computer to connect and move files.

If you turn off PC Companion/Update Service and connect your phone to computer, can

you describe exactly what happens when you connect the phone to your Vista computer? Does Windows trying to install drivers or do you get any error messages? Can you access the memory via Windows explorer? Can you check in Windows, Control panel, Device Manager whether you have any warning/fault icons?

For me, that works. I can access the files on the phone's memory card. No errors in Device Manager.

Actually, that was all I wanted. I really thought you needed the file manager in PC Companion to access the files, like it was with my old P1i phone.

It is still annoying that PC Companion won't install, but when the time comes to upgrade my phone I hope the problem will be solved. (Actually, the chances are quite high I will choose another brand next time.)

@ Thomas.S - I’m sorry to hear that but glad that you have got file transfer sorted. Please be aware that I have tested this with the same operating system without problem. This indicates that there is a third party software confliction or security restriction on the PC that is interfering with the installation. Given the almost infinite different configurations you could potentially have on your PC this become difficult for us to tell you exactly where the issue lies and I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

@ jennar 1991 - If this is a work PC that you are trying to install the application on, the likely issue is that you will not have the correct administrator rights to perform this installation. Can you confirm this?

One more thing, older versions of PC Companion installed and worked fine. It is only the latest version which does not install properly.

During my struggles to update to the latest version, I made an un-install followed by a successful install of an older version which I found online. I used that version for some weeks, until one day I was explicitely told by a pop-up window that I had to upgrade to the latest version. Which did not install.

I have the same issue, so my PC Companion sync is not working for the last weeks. When could we expect a new version of PC Companion from SonyEricsson, that solves the issue within the 2.01.231 version?

The uninstall of the PC Companion succedded, however I got the same error messages when trying to install v2.01.217.

Which version did you succeed to install? Could you please supply a download link to the older version of PC Companion that you used?

I think I used version 2.01.187, but I am not certain. I just googled for another version number and found a site which provided older versions. I do not remember where it was.

But the thing is, the PC Companion update manager (or the PC Companion itself?) recently did not allow me use this version anymore. It would not start, there was only a message that I need to upgrade in order to use it.

Yes. I have to upgrade my Xperia M to Android 4.3 and I face the same issue. What pisses me off and further disappoints me are all bugs and issues I faced using Sony PCC. First up, it was unable to upgrade due to Windows Firewall, despite the fact it was disabled. I tried removing PCC and downloading it again since this helped to upfrade my old Xperia Play. When I try to install, I get the same error message. This is the last time I buy an Xperia smartphone off Sony, due to their in competence when it comes to eradicating issues. I'm surprised no Sony official replied to this.

Hope Sony's Cyber Shot cameras are better than this garbage!

I have a Sony Xperia M Dual C2004.....
I was waiting for Android 4.3 update for such a long time and I get this!!.....
I'm facing a similar problem!!....
I downloaded Sony PC Companion from Sony website and it crashes everytime I try to start it...
My 9-year-old PC Runs on MS Windows Xp sp3 32bit.....
I restarted my PC millions of time, but the PC Companion won't start, it just showed the message 'Sony PC Companion has stopped. The information you were working might be lost. Send this to Microsoft.' And I have to click 'Don't send'.

Then I Googled for an hour and found another older version of Sony PC Companion on another website, which worked, but that also was quitting in a process (I don't exactly remember what I was doing that made it quit)....

When I connect my phone, it shows Sony™ Xperia™ Smartphone..... (But where's 'M Dual').....

And I don't think that version of Sony PC Companion is also reliable.....

Anyone help......
