Xperia Arc keeps restarting itself

Hi,

After many months of ownership and putting up with this problem and being fobbed off by the shop I took the phone from to perform upgrades etc I am finally fed up with my Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc resetting itself on the slightest of knocks it recieves. I am very knowledgable on computers etc, build them and know for a fact this MUST be a hardware problem or design flaw as it ONLY happens when the phone receives the slightest taps or knocks...eg in my pocket and my hand my tap my pocket whilst walking. Or simply placing the phone on a table is enough to make it restart if i dont place it down veeeeeeeeeeery gently like its a bloody bomb waiting to explode!! Personally I wish it would, at least then I'd get a replacement!!

I'd like Sony to admit there is a problem with some of these models, recall them and give me a replacement as I can see simply from this forum that its not uncommon and the moderators here are simply suggesting to update the software which solves nout when it comes to this problem!

PLEASE some help!! I still have 18 months to go on this bloody contract and despite being a fan of Sony products, TV's, sound systems and even the phones this has put me off so much I am seriously considering never buying Sony again!! Hell am even starting rate this phone below the Apple IPhone!

I don't think it's a design flaw, or the problem would be more widespread (and considering my two year old nephew launched my Arc across the room at the weekend, luckily it bounced off a sofa first!, and it never restarted)

Could be a hardware fault though.

One thing to try - does the battery feel loose at all? or for that matter, the rear cover? I'm sure someone else (i think it was on this forum) had a loose battery...

It has already been getting reported about since back in May and even with previous sony ericssons.

You are right it is not massively widespread but on that website alone there are over 1700 people who have responded to the online survey saying they have experienced this problem so it clearly is a problem with a good number of the sony ericsson phones. And more and more people are realizing that simply placing the phone on the table can cause the restart.

There must have been a bad batch made or something with so many people experiencing this!

I've left my phone at someone elses house so when i get it back i'll see if battery feels loose! The cover has always felt fine though.

Can you try to perform a software/firmwware repair using PC Companion to see if ot helps.

Connect your phone to the PC via the USB cable

The repair option on PC Companion (Support Zone --> Update --> Repair).

If that did not work, can you try the SE Update service

Download, install and launch the update service. Follow the onscreen prompts.

I had the same problem and i am pretty sure that it's hardware problem.

try this:

1. remove back cover

2. remove battery

3. place some paper (little piece) between the phone and battery in the bottom part of phone

Paper should be placed on thin edge opposite to sim card slot. In this way you will push battery up.

After I did this my phone never restarted for 3 months (only when i manually restart it)

Well phone doesnt even switch on or charge anymore!! Tried 3 different chargers and computer and no life at all in the phone.

Its only a few months old so i went to Phones 4 u, where I bought it, as they are still responsible to repair or replace it. But as it wont charge I've lost everything I had on the phone, pictures, videos, messages some of which were very important to me!

Thanks for the replies though but I already stated its not a software problem. Think I'll sell the phone when it comes back and buy the Samsung Galaxy which critics have been rating as the best smartphone around at the moment!

Know this is going to be a pain, but we had exactly the same problem with my wife`s phone from Phones for U.

1) Backup all contact details.

2) Factory Reset Phone wipe the lot start from fresh.

3) Ensure the first thing you do is sign in with your gmail account. - I do not know why but whenever the wife does not do this none of the google services (calender/mail/piccassa etc ) set up correctly.

4) restore contacts.

5) carry on and enjoy.

we did this in the shop with phones for u and its not failed since.

My phone was fine...I did these steps automatically due to having HTC Hero previous to the SE Arc.

My phone started rebooting every time the 3G was on and there was no wifi nearby. It was non-stop, until battery was dead.

Tried PC companion fix and didn't work. Sent to repair for software fix and it didn't work either. Now it went for hardware repair. Will let you know the outcomes.

Hi, mine has started doing this too... It reboots everytime i use the 3G and today did it while i was using an app too. Has your hardware repair come back yet? I can't use the internet through it for more than 30 seconds before it reboots. VERY frustrating.

try a different SIM card. also check which android version and build number you currently have. but most likely the issue is a faulty sim card

Hi, thanks for the response, i've tried a different SIM card and had the same problem.

I've updated the phone to the latest android 4.0 version but i had the problem before this and was optimistically hoping that this may cure the issue, but it hasn't. I've no idea what the build number is, it says SI 1254-1958 on the back if that's it? The phone also shuts down when using the navigation and when using Apps that (to my knowledge) don't use the internet once downloaded. (Fruit Ninja). I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment...

i got my experia arc before 2 weeks(almost) and suddenly as it was charging it started restarting again and again and again!!the phone is completely useless!!Some help plss!!

my sony Arc keeps rebooting from a variety of apps only had this just over 1 month it is becoming very frustrating. problem is erratic happens a lot in camera mode. Have checked and software is up to date really need some help on this.

Hi,

my problem was a little bit stupid.

While connected Arc to PC I accidentally made a copy of one file inside ".android_secure" directory (SD card)

after that the phone started restarting. It was confusing since even with the SD card out the phone restarted.

Deleting the "XYZ - Copy.asec" file (on another Xperia through PC) made my Arc restart again and then work OK.

I hope this helps some 1% of you.

My Xperia Arc S was restarting after dropping it on a table from like 3-5 cm.

It looks like it is a matter of a little bit loose battery. I wrapped mine with paper, put it into the phone, closed the cover and started the phone. Now even after dropping the phone from like 10 cm it does not restart anymore.

So what is the status now? Did you try the repair or tightened the battery with a paper? Bcos I'm facing the same prob here.

My arc s is only 2 weeks old and I'm facing the same problem. I didn't update it to ICS and installed some games from gameloft and some applications from google play.

But I tried factory installed game which is Let's Golf! 3 and when it's loading phone leads to kind of a stuck situation. So I switched off the phone and switched on. So I don't know sometimes this might be the cause. But also I doubt some of the apps and games installed by myself could leads to this behaviour.

**But I noticed something when I'm getting more voice calls restarting happens. Sometimes during a call or after a call. When I'm not getting much calls it's not restarting I guess, not 100% sure though. (my previous phone was a xperia ray and it was given same behaviour)

I tried followings but still no luck.

1)Format the SD card first, remove the SD card and sim. Finally reset to factory default settings(didn't install any app or game after reset)

2)Place a piece of paper to tightned the battery (lot of users have the battery loosing problem but in my case battery is tight enough but still I tried)

3)I tried to repair using PC companion and SUS but both are leads to update to the ICS. So I didn't do the update after refered this - http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/35431

4)Finally I went to claim the warranty. Now waiting for an update from them. I'll let you know once I get it back

Also I didn't try following options.

1)Switch off the wi-fi (Some users metioned they have problem with wifi but in my case even I'm not using wifi it still restarting)

2)Change operation mode to GSM only from HSDPA/GSM mode

3)Remove only SD card and try

4)Remove only SIM card and try

5)Update to ICS (The best option would be to hand it over to a sony repair center otherwise you can't go back to GB officially. If you flashed that could leads to warranty issues. Also after ICS update you can't corner the problem wether it is a OS problem or a HW problem)

Hi Guys I found the problem and restart issue solved in my Arc S.

In my case I changed the "Network Mode" in "Mobile Network Settings" to "GSM only" and since then my phone is working wihout any problem. Not a single restart even when I'm playing heavy games like Asphalt 6: Adrenaline and NFS Shift.

As I said earlier in my previous comment I tried all the options I metioned and had no luck. So I claimed the warranty and got a new phone as well. After one or two days it also restarted. So then as the final step I upgraded OS to ICS. But restarting problem is also there with the ICS. So I gave up and as the final try I changed the "Network Mode" in "Mobile Network Settings" to "GSM only". So it worked for me and greatly running with ICS. It looks like there is a HW problem in SE receiver I guess. Sometimes this solution might not working with your handset because it may be related to your country as well I think. BTW I'm from Sri Lanka.

So give it a try guys...
