It may be somehow water resistant, but it isn't certified as such. So if it gets wet and it stops working fine we can't ask Sony to have it fixed/replaced.

Perhaps, like any phone really, if you get liquid on it and wipe it clean, or stop any liquid from getting to a port, or too far in, then it'll be fine.

Nonetheless, Sony hasn't made any mention of any water resistence or proofing - So I'll take it for what it is and I wouldn't try to see

I'm looking at picking up an X Compact, but would like it to be waterproof. It looks like Docomo is releasing an IP65/68-certified version of the X Compact next week (SO-02J).

I've read one commenter's opinion that this Docomo version is actually the same model, and that the reason it is being IP65/68 -certified is because Docomo is agreeing to take on the cost of warrantee replacements itself. The commenter is of the opinion that the cost that Sony wanted to avoid was not the waterproofing process during the manufacturing, but the cost of the returns in the rare cases where damage occurs (i think this is along the lines of what yce might have been saying earlier).

I've watched the Pepsi video, and although the X Compact survives, the poster does comment that the speakers and camera have issues after the test. This would seem to run counter to the idea that all X Compacts have been waterproofed during the manufacturing process. On the other hand, it could have just been that Pepsi is a far cry from water.

I'm not in Japan, so if I pick up the Docomo version, I won't be able to use the warrantee if something goes wrong anyway. My question is what opinion above people think is right?

The Japanese version of the X-compact is advertised as waterproof certified, while the rest of the world version is not marketed as such.

I think it may be a bit troublesome to make all the X-compact phones in non-waterproof and then waterproof versions, so my guess is Sony Japan market it as waterproof whereas outside of Japan as not. Since the X series is supposed to be a notch lower than the Z in price, it makes sense for them to avoid having to warrent waterproofing of the X compact which can be costly.

So I think x-compacts are all waterproof but if you buy it outside Japan and if it does get any water damage it's not covered.

Not even salt water, let alone the corrosive Pepsi or Coke indeed.

Still looking at it it seems pretty sealed to me. The slot for SIM/SD Card has a gasket as well. Just the USB C is flat open, but so it is in many certified water resistant phones.

I also would like to buy a X compact with official IP cetification (buying in Sweden), so I can claim waterproofness on warranty but accroding to GSMarena, it seems like I have to step up (both in physical size and prize) to either XZ or X performance to get IP68, but then I loose FM radio, which I also want.

I also guess that the X compact is the same in Japan as in rest of the world but the difference is the "warranty", not the waterproofness as such, but I can not be sure...

/Patrik
