After around 14 months of happily using my xperia Z3 compact I have encountered my second major problem with the device. Around 2 weeks ago after setting up a portable hotspot on my phone, my phone began to get buggy and not work properly, it would reboot itself without any user input and then it stopped connecting to wifi. The bluetooth still works and I can still make and receive calls and texts.

At this point I tried all the usual fixes listed on forums such as hard and soft reset, updating to latest OS and rebooting in safe mode. I haven't tried repair via PCC or messing around with "roots" as the USB port on my phone is broken and I can't connect my phone to my computer. So as all the usual stuff didn't work I did some digging and stumbled across a thread on xda-developers, in which there are a number of people with the exact same problem as me. They had also tried pretty much everything and nothing solved the problem, except for random repeated diagnostics testing.

I then discovered an interesting quirk of the problem after reading that thread, if I ran a diagnostics test wifi and bluetooth would pass everytime and GPS would fail the diagnostic test.

I would be interested to hear if any other users have had similar experiences and potential fixes for this problem as from what I have seen at least there is no guaranteed fix.

I will be cross-posting this on other forums and will link/share anything interesting and relevant that those posts produce. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply, but I have already tried to get the USB port repaired by Sony and as my handset was purchased in HK and I now live in the UK, Sony UK point blank refused to repair my device under warranty as it was a non-UK handset, which to be honest was pretty annoying as I've been a loyal Sony customer for quite some time, however that's another saga that I'm not going to get into right now.

As regards the suggestion to do a software repair, the other forums I have looked at, people have tried EVERYTHING as I said above. (I would post a link but everytime I try it gets marked as spam. EDIT; added the link to the forum I referred to in the parent post.) http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/help/xperia-z3-compact-wifi-wont-t3307225

That's fine Cameron, I wasn't really looking for you to comment on that anyway, as I said before that's another issue for another time.

The issue I am interested in resolving currently is my phone's wifi capability, which as is stated in the forum I provided the link to, unable to be repaired by any of the usual methods, software repair, repair via PCC, hard and soft resets and safe mode reboots. Please do not ask me to try any of this stuff again. I am looking for new solutions.

To clarify, you're recommending shipping my out of warranty device from the UK to HK, paying to have it repaired and shipping it back to the UK to fix the USB port, so I can then attempt to resolve the wifi problem, when there are no known or guaranteed fixes for that problem.

I am sorry but for that amount of money, time and for the amount of aggravation I would no doubt incur throughout that lengthly and inefficient process I think I would rather take my business to a different manufacturer.

Sincerely,

A disgruntled (former)customer

@conord,

Not exactly. What I am saying is, I believe the solution to your wifi issue is software related, and reinstalling the software may resolve this problem. However, to reinstall the software, your phone needs to be connected to a computer via USB. Because your USB port is not working, I am stuck on what I can do to help you resolve this. I am recommending you allow an authorised Sony repair centre to fix your phone for you, which will include both the USB port and the wifi issue.

I understand it is frustrating that your local support region are not able to fix this, but this is quite standard across multiple manufacturers. I do wish I had another way around it, but having your device repaired in the correct region, I believe, is the solution to this issue.

I apologise for the inconvenience this causes you.

Thanks in advance.

For the last 2 weeks I've been having similar issues with my ~19 mth old D5833 Xperia Z3 Compact. The wifi kept dropping, but the phone's diagnostic tests passed the wifi and bluetooth, and failed the GPS.

As my USB port is working, I have connected my phone, and backed it up and reset the software, however all this achieved was the major annoyance of having to reinstall the phone's apps via a very unstable wifi connection.

Since then the wifi will not connect at all - even after restarting the phone, and powering off to let it cool (suspecting hardware is overheating). Bluetooth no longer works reliably - it will connect for a few seconds then drop. Now the wifi/bluetooth/gps tests all pass, so I'm beginning to think this is pretty meaningless.

Aside from my connection issues, the phone seems quite stable.
