Auto power off

Hi all

I have made a quick search on the forum but did not find anything really relevant, so here we go:

My 3 years old Z Ultra has been acting strangely for the last 3 or 4 weeks. As the battery is still about 70 or 80 % good, the phone suddenly warns me that the battery is low, and that it is powering off.

I have done a complete reset and re installed most of my applications ( not all, and no more games..) .This did not solve the problem.

Sometimes, it is hard to restart, or I have to go through the long process of all applications resetting. If I connect the charger, after a few minutes, the level is back to almost normal level, 50 or 70 %.

I still like my phone and its big screen, it is still in very good shape, and is still OK for me.

Has any of you experienced anything like this ? Is the battery at the end of its life, and should it be replaced ? I have actually ordered (and received ) one on eBay, but I am afraid to do it and damage the phone.

Hi @pilou, sorry to hear about your phone.

It is possible that this is hardware related but you could try to calibrate the battery. This can be done by depleting the battery completely, until you are unable to power on the device at all. Once this is done you then charge the battery back up to 100% while the phone is powered off.

If this does not help I recommend that you get your phone examined by an authorised service center. Your Local support team can help you proceed with this if need be.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

My phone died on me again this morning, with a battery level still pretty high. It is right now stuck in a booting loop, I will let the battery die completely, and try to follow your suggestion.

3 years is a venerable age for a smartphone, especially for me who used to change them quite often. It is a pity Sony has not deemed necessary to issue another large screen flagship, I would have undoubtly bought it. I cannot come back to a smaller screen, and I am therefore watching what other brands are offering, but I still can't find any interesting one.

Hi again.

The battery deep cycling did nothing, the phone failed again on the very first try...

However, I went ahead and changed the battery, and the problems looks to be solved... Fingers crossed, maybe my Z Ultra will last me another 3 years..

Well, it looks like my dear Z Ultra won't last much longer after all...

The battery behaviour was strange after the swap, the reading were going up and down incoherently , this morning after a night charge .the batt level was stuck to a constant 50%, so I let it die again ( full luminosity/screen on ), and now it can't be charged, either through usb plug or side charging plots.

The notification LED blinks red, but nothing else is happening... I guess that the new battery was a fake ( it was sold as a genuine Sony battery on eBay but...) , or that there is hardware damage.It's a shame, as the phone is still in very good cosmetic shape.

Probably time for a new phone. Nothing interesting ( to me ) in the current Sony range , sorry.

A quick update on this thread... After a second visit to the small shop who changed my battery, reopening the phone and disconnecting/reconnecting the battery, it has been since then working fine ( save a freak auto reboot once...)

So I am a happy camper, I hope my Z Ultra will still be OK for a while...I wish it had 4G feature though.
