Automatic Switching to Wifi?

I am new to Sony/Android. How does the switch from mobile to Wifi connection happen on a Sony Z3C? Special settings on my phone?

Am I notified when I am in a wifi zone, so I can save using up data allowance from my carrier by switching to wifi?

I was actually not interested in "power saving" issues. I woudl like to learn how and under what cirumstances the phone switches to Wifi from cell use, to save data/money.

Keeping wi-fi on all the time will make it connect to a saved network.

So, let's say, as I am surfing the net on a cell connection, I enter a new wifi-active area (for example, a Starbucks). Will the phone alert me that I just entered a wifi area? Or does it switch me over from cell to wifi automatically, without me havign to do anything, and switch me back to cell when I leave the wifi area?

And, regarding your answer about switching me to a previously saved network: do I get notification when the switch from cell to wifi takes place?

And can you please keep your answers simple emough for a layperson not familiar with phone lingo to understand?

There is a setting in your wifi menu called network notification, which will notify if a new network is available. However, there are some places where you need to accept some terms or login. Otherwise, if it is a secured network and you have connected before, it will automatically connect when you are in range.

Related to mobile data usage, the phone should automatically switch to mobile data if you are out of a wifi network coverage.
