topic Z3 Marshmallow 6.0.1 update does not support OTG properly in XPERIA archive

My phone has Sandisk Ultra 128GB MicroSDXCI class 10 inserted as my daily storage and my phone detects it well in Settings > Storage.

However, when I tried to insert additional storage via OTG ON TOP of my inserted daily storage mentioned above, I noticed that Z3 6.0.1 Update does not take it well. Here's result of my mini experiment:

1. OTG+32GB flash drive = [OK]
2. OTG+32GB Sandisk Ultra MicroSDHCI = [OK]
3. OTG+64GB flash drive = [FAILED]
4. OTG+64GB Sandisk Ultra MicroSDXCI = [FAILED]
5. OTG+128GB Sandisk Ultra MicroSDXCI = [FAILED]

[OK] means the Settings > Storage display both my daily storage and OTG storage. Stock file manager & 3rd party file manager like ES explorer, etc... works well in detect and access both Daily storage and OTG storage at the same time.

[FAILED] means the Settings > Storage display OTG storage name Twice as if it overide my daily storage. If i click either one of the name, it will lead me to the OTG storage. Now my daily storage is no longer shown and acccessible. After I Eject the OTG storage, now can see and acccess my daily storage again. Both Stock file manager and 3rd party file manager like ES explorer, etc... encounter the same issue.

Conclusion, after Z3 gets Marshmallow update, it no longer support mounting OTG Storage on top of inserted sdcard if the OTG Storage is MORE than 32GB. When i was using Lollipop, I did not encounter this issue.

Is SONY aware of this?

Does this occur to other Sony phones or other brands running Marshmallow?

Besides root & installing custom rom, does anyone have solution or for this?

Hi There,

Since upgrade to 6.0.1, I am facing problem with External USB Disk connected either via OTG cable or directly into USB port.

I am receiving prompt that command '## volume partition disk:8,0 public' failed with '400 27 Command failed'

There is nothing wrong neither with OTG cable nor USB Disk itself as it is perfectly recognised by older Xperia M, PC, Ubunt.

I see in Terminal that android.permission MOUNT_FORMAT_FILESYSTEMS is missing for current user and current process

Anybody can suggest how to use external USB Disk with X Z3C under Marshmallow?

Thanks

After upgrade to Marshmallow, USB flash on exFat is not working anymore. I think it's because of framework change of google, but it's very inconvinient. I hope Sony can fix this issue on future update. Thanks.

Based on what i can see on the IMEI you have registered with us, there's a new firmware update available for your unit. Can you please try to update your phone to the latest firmware and see if that helps? You can update from Settings -> About phone -> Software update or by using Xperia Companion.

From what i can see here, you should be able to update your unit to 23.5.A.0.575. But depending on your market, the update may not be available over the air yet.

Could you take a log from your phone in case 3, 4 or 5 and send it to me?

To do this:
Settings > About phone > Build number, tap 7 times on the build number
Go back to Settings and select Developer options and turn on "USB debugging". Then tap "Logger buffer sizes" and set this to "4 M".
- Restart the phone (with one of the bigger SD cards inserted but not the OTG)

- Connect the drive using OTG
Settings > Developer options, select "Take bug report". When the report is ready (may take a minute or so) you get a notification that you can tap and share to Google Drive. Please send me a link to this file in a private message.

Further investigated, 128gb exFat card on old USB 2.0 card reader actually works, but same card is not working on USB 3.0 card reader. This USB 3.0 card reader worked perfectly fine on Lollipop. Maybe new Google otg driver is the culprit. Poor driver compatibility.

Found another issue. It's seems Marshmallow can't support otg drive and sd card simultaneously. If I mount otg drive, both sd card folder and otg drive will show content of otg drive. If I re-insert sd card, both folders show content of sd card. otg function is practically useless on marshmallow. I really hope sony flip back to old implimentation.
