Ok i checked the issue after reading all the post in there and found it quite strange that connection failure occured for many people. But another thing that make me mad is having that MTP APP application that became bigger and bigger and now reached 9 mb in a week for me... Having those kind of data stored on internal memory where we want to save as much space as possible is something sony Ericsson need to patch/correct.

Ok here is what i found:

I tried deleting the data of the MTPAPP to check if those data are optional and could be deleted safely... Of course not 😕

After deleting them the phone couldn't connect in media transfer mode anymore ... in fact the first time it was detected but no files was shown in explorer

I tried a reboot of the phone but this time nothing. the Xperia play is available on 'printer and other device' but nothing on My computer and of course i can't access my files via Media transfer.

The only way to access is using the usb mode mass storage... so i tried to reboot another time and still nothing

I thought that i needed to restore the phone (factory restore) to be able to get the data i deleted back...

But there is another way to solve the issue and quite easily.

You need first to launch pc companion on your computer (optional)

Then in the phone go in settings > Sony Ericsson Menu > connectivity

Enable install of PC companion and be sure that the usb connection mode is set to multimedia transfer mode.

When it's done disconnect / connect your phone to your PC

IT should start the installation of the driver again like if it was the first time.

After a little while you should see your phone appearing in explorer and browse into your folder without problem.

You can go and check you app MtpApp in the application manager that is now > 6MB

The data are in fact installed on the device (xperia play) too in the process.

That's why it could fail...

The two device are in fact needing some files to be able to share information.

My sentences are sometimes not really clear but they are understandable (i'am french that's why)

I will try to translate this post in french and spanish later

I hope Sony Ericsson could figure out a way to put all the necessary data in PC only but i'am not sure it's possible also please do something about the size of this application or move it to SD with a new update...

Sony should correct easily the problem by updating pc companion on computer

Hello,

I seem to be having problems connecting my Xperia Play to my computer in MTP mode.

It has worked in the past but recently would not connect to PC Companion and when I checked Device Manager the phone was listed with an exclamation mark. I've tried uninstalling the device from Device Manager and allowed it to reinstall but now it fails to install the driver.

Any help would be appreciated 🙂

P.S.

No help so far on this issue but I have found a sort of work around for it.

I've managed to get the driver reinstalled after removing some apps from my phone (it was very low on internal storage - probably not related to this issue but you never know) and exiting the PC Companion software (right click on icon in notification area and exit)

Now it will only connect correctly to my PC if the PC Companion software isn't running. Once connected in MTP mode and Windows displays the Xperia Play as a drive I can launch PC Companion and use it to sync my phone. Unfortunately this makes it impossible to set it up to sync wirelessly as the software needs to be running before connecting the phone to pair it 😞

I've had the exact same problems, the only way I got it working before today was to close the pc companion software then re-connect the usb cable loads of times until it eventually worked, very annoying! today it seems better though (touch wood), It detects the phone right away even with the pc software open, see how long it lasts lol.

Seems like a bug to me!

P.S, I'm running Windows 7 32 Bit

This was the same issue with my Galaxy S with a 16GB card inserted in. Note after you have finished your PC sync you will need to revisit the same settings and re-mount your card again. Rubbish way I know.

Mark

I had this on my Galaxy S phone which worked fine until I started loading MP3 files onto the card. I have been told that this is one of the reason why dismounting your external card enables connectivity of the MTP driver again, try it I could be wrong.

Mark
