Automatic Cell Connection To WIFI

I am unclear how I can monitor when the phone has switched to my home Wifi network, to prevent Cellphone Network charges? Is there a setting that forces a "WIFI only" connection, i.e. that disables cell connections?

I also ask this to figure out a way to reduce battery drain.

If you have both mobile data and wifi enabled at the same time, if you go out of range of a wifi network, it will switch to mobile data. If you come back in range, you only need to turn on the display (as wifi won't connect from sleep) and that's it.

Great. But if I don't have Mobile switched on, will cell service still switch over to wifi automatically, when I am within range of a saved network? Will I not save battery power if I were able to turn off cell service completely when within WIFI range? If so, how do I disconnect from cell service?

I am not sure I understand. If mobile data is disabled, what other cell service do you want to deal with? If only wifi is enabled, you simply need to turn on the display when in range.

The question was: can I disconnect cell service on my phone (and receive and place calls over wifi only)? Or are calls always routed over cell connections, and only data travels over wifi, when available?

If you want to place calls over wifi, you need to use 3rd party apps (hangouts, skype etc). If you switch to airplane mode or no SIM, you won't be able to place GSM calls (normal calls).
