Gmail Notification Symbol

Hi, I've had my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact for a week now and still trying to get used to it (big change from a blackberry!). I have a couple of questions if anyone can help...

I've copied my gmail icon to the bottom row of the homescreen, next to my normal email app. (Bottom row meaning the one with the little app button in the middle - excuse my naivety.) Although the normal email icon next to it has a little orange circle showing the number of new emails, the gmail one doesn't. If I find the gmail icon by going to the app screen however, the number in the circle is there. I also have this problem in Whatsapp - the shortcut for this is on my homescreen, but the shortcut doesn't display a notification icon either, despite it showing on the apps page. Does anyone know how to make these appear?

Also, I've set up a password to unlock my phone. Is there any way of preventing my phone from locking itself while it sleeps though? I want to use a password to unlock it only when I've actually locked it. At the moment it looks every time it goes to sleep, which is after 1 minute of inactivity.

I hope someone understands my terrible explanation and I appreciate your help! Thanks

About the circle notification,it has been asked before. Some apps have it,some do not. Gmail is from google, you have to check this with them.

For the phone to not lock itself after going to sleep, you can extend the time after it will lock itself or use smart lock (you need smartwear for that).
