Getting to my wits end with my new Sony Z3C, since buying it I have had major location reporting Issues.

The phone was purchased outright and is being used on a Vodafone plan, both initially 3G enabled and now 4g enabled. The problem has persisted since day one. Now I am sure if this was a network and handset compatibility issue, this would've been addressed at a high level by Sony.

My issues are, poor accuracy, gps dropping off, unable to find current location, finding current location but then not tracking changes to my position. Problem occurs in all apps tried, Google maps, waze, yahoo maps, Garmin navigation. Appears to get a general read on my location when location services are accessed by an app, I.e. Facebook for check ins or tinder.

Steps taken to repair the situation, factory reset, twice. Problem still persists. Returned to the Sony authorised repair centre in NZ, returned and problem still persisted. Downloaded gps testing apps, very slow if ever gets a 3d fix. Have used my SIM card/account in an iPhone 5 and works perfectly. Contacted Vodafone tech support who just didn't call me back. May try again.

I've also recorded videos which I will post when they have uploaded.

Question 1. Anyone successfully using a Sony z3c 5883 on Vodafone nz 4g?
Question 2. Has this kind of fault been encountered before and is there a possible fix in the access point names?

That's odd, do you have stamina mode on?

but you can contact your local Sony directly

http://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/contactUs/

Thanks for the reply. Definitely no stamina mode on, location set to high accuracy. Followed all the gps data purge options in previous threads here too.

I'll upload the videos to YouTube overnight, it's just taking forever for them upload, the. You can see Google maps in (in)action.

Have already sent to Sony once, and am about to return it again this week. They were quite dismissive and immediately said it was the carrier. I find that unlikely as they wouldn't sell a carrier-free unlocked handset without extensive testing in any geographic region, and heck we only have three carriers! It could be a setting somewhere in the access point names, but you'd need like level 3 tech support to go through those.... Hoping to find something before I have to send it off and come back with another wiped phone...

There are few things you can do to test that theory, you could flash a different firmware and then test it

/t5/Xperia-Z2/How-to-manually-update-downgrade-root-2014-Xperias/td-p/593459

or unlock the phone and test it with a different carrier

Do you have any antivirus or taskillers?

I might try a different firmware in the future, but keen not to risk my warranty at this stage.

I have stock antivirus in there avg but haven't looked at it tbh.

And it was like this out of the box. Having said that, it appears to have actually gotten worse if that makes sense. It was kind of okay at first, then has deteriorated. I know that sounds crazy, but it's worse now than after I restarted it when I got it back from Sony.

What I really want is to try my sim in another Sony z3c and try mine on other carriers. But getting a telecom sim is not that easy. I hope the repair guys will be thorough this time, clearly it was just reset last time.

The phone is sold unlocked in NZ for use on any network. Maybe I should quickly buy like a basic sim and test it on another network...

Ps - have just run a scan with avg, wasn't running before.

I've created two videos to demonstrate the issue

The first is a screen capture recording (sorry for the radio audio in the background) in this video I attempt to use google maps firstly to track my position as I drive home, you'll see the location dance all over the place after the first 30 secs or so I then turn on navigation to take me home in google maps, you will see the icon repeatedly stop, then jump to catch up, and then take a right turn (where i turned left) and jump to catch up. You will see it repeatedly hang where I did not stop the whole journey home apart from exiting right off the motorway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX8twc_P3rA

The second is me demonstrating my inability to get a lock using the gps test app, I am close to a bridge, but really that should not interfere, i keep testing for 3.5 mins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aRwL9EBv3E

feedback welcome!
