I repeatedly set custom ring tones and alarm sounds for the phone but the periodically resets all sounds back to factory defaults. Very annoying to continually have to pick my sounds over and over and over. What is going on? Any solution to thsi problem. Sony support wasn't able to help in a phone call. Not surprised as they haven't helped with any of the phones quirky behavior.

You could also check safe mode:

http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/How-to-boot-your-phone-into-safe-mode/m-p/348008

See if the same problem occurs in safe mode, but after you check the internal storage suggestion.

I agree with Uliwooly here, this could be an issue with the phone reading the SD card correctly ( if you are using one). If that is the case, you could backup the SD card and then perform a format and then reload the ringtones.

Let us know if this helps.
