E-mail notification Sony SP

My desktop icon is still showing one item of unread mail even though all e-mails are read and every folder is empty. How can I fix this, it has happened before also and I re-installed the account to fix which is a pain.

Try Clearing the email app data.

How to clear data on apps.
From your Home screen

1. Tap the Application screen icon.
2. Find and tap Settings > Apps.
3. Swipe to the All tab.
4. Find and tap on the email app.
5. Tap Force stop > Clear data.
6. Restart the phone

I'm afraid it didn't work - after restarting the app still showed one unread e-mail and my account was deleted ! My phone then froze as SPs do all the time ! Went back into the e-mail app and cleared cache and data which did the trick, then re-installed the account.

Do you encounter the same issue if you use another email app with the same account? perhaps using Gmail or other app from the playstore

I only use this app Phy as really I'm not a prolific mobile e-mail user. On the subject of the phone's performance, the continual lagging, hanging, freezing which is well documented, can you help with that please. I've seen answers before about flashing the bios and going back to earlier versions but it seems they invalidate the warranty. Any suggestions appreciated - thank you
