False voicemail notification

Yesterday I received a phone call that I did not answer, just a couple seconds after it stopped ringing I got a message notification. I looked at my phone and there was a red "voicemail" icon in the notification area. So I pulled down and clicked on the icon, it said I needed to register first. So I opened the phone book and pressed 1, it says no messages.

I'm sure I overlooked it, but I didn't see it in the owners manual that came with my phone. Do I need to register for the answering machine? If so, why didn't that go to my carrier voicemail? It doesn't seem it would go to an answering machine that I haven't registered for yet. I used to love the Sony Erricson phones, until AT&T stopped carrying them, so I finally ordered one unlocked, so that could be part of it also, but I wouldn't think so.

Thanks for the help

Robby

Do you have any other phone apps, or perhaps "Google Voice"?

Also contact AT&T ASAP as it could be on them not the phone.
