Hi All!

I'm planning to upgrade from my Xperia P to a Z1 Compact. While reading up on the phone i came across so many posts about Cracking Screens of the Z series of phones including the Z1 Compact, which I was so interested in getting.

Durability is a MUST for me and my Xperia P served me exceptionally well in that department, with some of my mates compare it to the famed Nokia 3310! I never use cases or special screen protectors..... yet with Heat from use and gaming, 3 foot drops, accidentally sleeping on top of it over night, it still works.

My query is simple.

- Are the stories about these "Self Cracking" screens true? Is it also present in the Z3 Compact?

- Does it live up to the Sturdy Reputation which is advertized?

I don't want to buy a phone and then Spend more time Protecting it that acually using it.

Hello harveyj88,

I am concerned about your situation because I currently have and use an Xperia Acro S with similar dimensions to the Xperia Z1 Compact...

And during the course of over a year I have not mistreated it, but I have accidentally dropped my phone more times than what I though it would last... all those drops to concrete, hard tile, asphalt and probably wooden floor... and the last fall it even landed flat on its screen...

My phone has small dents in the corners, scratches in the plastic back...

BUT luckily I havn't managed to crack the screen yet.... probably due to the ASF that our handsets brings...

So, my question is: How did you managed to crack your screen? is the Z1 Compact a delicate device?

This is one of the most important factors for me to decide to upgrade to it or not... I can live with the other issues that have been mentioned here (and most have an easy fix, or a potential software fix)... but I refuse to get an expensive phone if its going to crack after the first drop.

Thanks,

Diego.

hi dquilon

i had a xperia s before my upgrade and it was un breakable lol

well all i can say is this phone broke in my pocket, its cracked near the edge of the screen where the sd card and charging port is and on closer inspection the actual frame is bent and i think this has caused the screen to crack. i don't think the frame around the frame is solid enough. only replacement repair i can see is at a price of £279 and i'm not paying that!

Though you can buy the LCD replacement yourself, the replace is the biggest problem.

It's waterproof, so every two parts are glued by the adhesive sticker which owns the waterproof function. If you open the phone, you need the original adhesive sticker but you can't ensure it's still waterproof.

you can see the tear down guide http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/02/12/xperia-z1-compact-disassembly-guide/

You'd better take care a lot.

Good luck to you!

Well Harvey, this is the biggest disappointment I have had reading this forum.

I knew about the bending problem on the bigger Xperia Z1... but I was hopeful that having a smaller device, the bending would be more difficult... but I guess I was wrong...

I was so excited to finally have the option to upgrade to a device similar to my Acro S, but more powerful... but it has been one disappointment after the other...

I made the decision to wait for the next generation... or even go to a completely different brand...

Either way I currently love:

- the included charging dock of my Acro S

- microHDMI port (I already have 2 microHDMI cables and 1 adapter)

- ASF

- tough plastic back and enclosure

- size (the Acro S is almost perfect for me, a bit slimmer like Z1 C would be perfect)

- capacitive buttons off screen, do not take screen real state... so I might want a 4.5" screen device in the future.

So as you can see there are quite a bit sacrifices I already would be making by getting a new device which most likely wont have those features... but I was willing to do all that for the same quality I already got...

Thanks for your feedback. I am sad, but glad.

i never knew of the bending problem and i can't believe how fragile it is, its about time sony recognised this problem and fixed it, i've since read that in europe somewhere it has been a massive porblem and thousands of cases are being reported on it. but sony don't see it as a manufacturing fault!

i've got it booked in at sony now, so i will be sending it away tomorrow i'm expecting a big bill for something that should be fixed for free

Hi, i recieved my phone back today and had to pay £127.56 for a new aliminum frame and lcd screen, which was better than £280 i was quoted by a mobile phone repair shop, although i was still not happy about it.

the sony care team are meant to e-mail when they recieve the phone and also at each stage the phone is at to keep you updated but all i recieved was a letter say i had to pay the price about 2 weeks after i sent them the phone.

so the phone is poor , the customer service is poor. This is my last Sony phone!

I know that most of my mates would be too lazy to go through all this so imagine how many others it's happended to that haven't written reviews/forums etc?

I have had my Z1 compact for just under two months. Have been getting very bothered at times when i can't do my unlock sequence properly due to the touch screen not working effectively. I normally clean the screen and get it to work when this happens.

This morning i awoke and went to check my phone which i had used without problem before i went to sleep and put it on the bedside table. I could not unlock it after numerous tries. I cleaned the screen and kept trying. I then noticed (only in the right light) a single big crack through the screen starting in the top right corning going diagonally down the screen. The screen touch function does not work properly and i cant unlock my phone and use at all. My friend called and it rang and displayed fine, but alas i could only swip half way across and couldt even answer the call!

I went to good old google and have found an array of forums/post reviews etc. about the "self cracking Z1 screen". These posts have come from all over the world by numerouse poeple with similar stories to me. This is not good enough for a phone i eagerly awaited and delayed upgrading my old one to wait for. WILL THIS BE REPLACED/REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE UNDER WARRANTY? how do i go about this? i got my phone from the Telstra shop at a local shopping centre.

Thnaks mate. I Will do ASAP. Just predicting the shop will say that it is my problem as is usually the case with cracked screens. The phone It hasn't been out long but i'm hoping the shop have experienced this before and accomodate me with a free warranty repair. Thought it would be good to see what Sony's response is in regards to this seen as i can't make it to the shop for a few days. And to also make others catious before purchasing one of the so called "flagship" phones.

I'm sorry to say this but that doesn't look like it cracked by itself. It looks like something has been pressed against the glass on one side of the phone but that's just my opinion. It's easy to do that when the phone is in a pocket without even realysing it.

I'm still sorry for you because I thing it's a great phone and it's never fun when something like that happens.
