I'm experiencing an issue with my Xperia Z3 when handling calls with earbuds and a mic. When in a call, the mic picks up the sound as it should be, however instead of just sending that sound to the person on the other end of the line, it is also sending it right back into my own ears. It's extremely distracting to hear my own voice a split second after I am speaking.

I have tested this with many different earbud/mic combinations. I have a basic Panasonic set, Apple Earpods, and Bose QC20 which all work perfectly fine on other phones (Apple and Android). However, when any of these are used with the Xperia Z3, it sends the sounds picked up by the mic straight back to my own ears.

Any suggestions? Is anyone else experiencing this same behavior?

Hi Thommo, appreciate your response.

Using a headset with an in-line mic is a pretty universal feature at this point that isn't really something that is vendor specific. I've used those same earbud/mics with such devices as a Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Moto X 2014, iPhone 5s, and others and they all work fine. The one constant is the Xperia Z3 which doesn't work with any of them. I just find it hard to believe that it would be an issue of compatibility.

I honestly don't know but with changing times the CTIA jack pinouts do change due to noise cancelling hence check compatibility

Hi Viridis - Thanks for your reply.

I did try running through and setting all manner of the call settings and did try those settings as you suggested. No help unfortunately.

I also disabled the data entirely (no mobile data and no wifi) and still the problem persisted.

I wonder if a connector in the headphone port itself has been reversed or something, or I wonder if perhaps the software on my device is corrupt in some very minor way.

Audio functions fine, left/right stero comes through properly over the headset. The device is clearly getting the audio input via the in-line mic properly as the person on the other end of the line can hear me just fine, and I've tested in-line mic separately via an audio recording app.

It's just that when a phone call gets engaged, the phone believes it needs to send the audio from my own mic straight back to my own headset. It's really strange.

Hi Viridis, yes, I have it set to general headset. Although perhaps it's worth mentioning that I do own the Sony MDR-NC31EM active noise canceling ear buds, and even those send all the audio picked up by the mics right back to my ears during calls.

Hey!

I have the same problem. It's really frustrating to get the talk-back audio represented in your own headset. Dunno what to do about it. I just bought a new pair of earbuds, Sennheiser CX 5.00G. Hope they work better....

Also wanna mention that my headset controls/buttons do not work as they should. Mid-button raises volume instead of play/pause.. and can't take/end calls either. Seems to be a problem with third party headset compatibility??

Z3 Model: D6603

I ended up calling Xperia Support. I explained the issue and they offered to service my phone under warranty for free without question. So we'll see if it comes back performing as it should.

On a side note, I used Sony's PC Connection software to perform a full repair on the phone software, and this did not resolve the issue either.

There is no way that is normal behavior. I've used multiple revisions of iPhones, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Moto X 2014, Galaxy S3, various HTC devices, and now the Sony Xperia Z3. And no device has behaved like this except for this phone, not to mention, Viridis already confirmed that his Xperia Z3 does not have this problem.

I'd say call them back, talk to a different support rep and explain the situation again.
