You can try to press and hold the power button and home button at the same time until the phone vibrates. if the behavior still persists, charge it for at least 3 hours and than try to repair the phone software using PC Companion:

http://www.sonymobile.com/update

In PC Companion, press start on Support Zone > Start on Update the phone/tablet software > Press the blue link that says "Repair phone/tablet". Do these steps without the phone connected. Than follow the guide, it will tell you when and how to connect to the PC.

My phone turned itself off a couple of days ago and now when I try to switch it back on, the screen will turn on for a few seconds but then it'll switch itself off again. I've tried to fix it using PC companion but it won't detect my phone and I can't charge it because it won't even switch on. Any idea on how I can fix this?

Ohh thank you

The thing is how am I supposed to charge it if it won't switch on? Shall I just connect it to the charger and wait for three hours? Also, PC Companion won't detect my phone so therefore can't repair it.

Yes, just keep your phone connected to the charger for a few minutes. Try to follow the repair guide in PC Companion. The phone will be turned completley off when you do this so perhaps the PC will be able to detect your phone for the repair.
