Xperia Z1 Compact Power Button Issue

Although this issue does not affect the phone's perfomance or how it work, it's just an annoying issue that hopefully can be solved.

The problem is that the power button on the phone has sort of gone soft or spongy? The click in it like all the other buttons has done and it requires more pressure than usual to push. Does anyone know how easily this problem can be solved and how I can do it?

I went to EE where I got the phone from and they said that the only option was to send it away which would mean my phone would be wiped completely. Although it is an annoying issue I don't think it is worth losing everything for it.

Fair enough, just please do bear in mind that issues of this nature tend to get worse overtime so it is quite possible that the button may cease functioning eventually, with this in mind do keep regular backups.
