Well my experience suggests you are right, and that even Sony share that view. When I bought my tablet it's firmware was out of date, but I waited a while before updating, to test and familiarise myself. When I did update, there were various problems. I contacted Sony who advised a repair re-install via PC Companion, which solved the problems. Then when 4.3 came along, similar story, the display would randomly flip upside down even with tablet motionless on a stand. Again, the solution was a clean install. Having read all the adverse comments on here about 4.4 issues, I have stuck with 4.3 which works fine for me, but I don't have a keyboard, so have never experienced the flickering others have found. I'm guessing it's partly down to inadequate testing (my job for many years) however I can see that might be difficult if they have to test not only a new build from a clean start, but also the upgrade process from every previous build that any user might still have if they had skipped one or more in the past. That complicates matters hugely and is likely to lead to issues being missed. Sony could make their own job easier, if the standard upgrade process was always backup, clean install, restore, but would the average user get that right unless it was completely automated? When I did my clean re-installs, neither the onboard tablet backup nor the PC Companion backup restored everything, I had to restore both to get all my apps, settings and data back.

If you want root on kitkat 4.4.4, you have to temporarily go back to kernel .230, than towelroot, and than back to .2.83.

If you want to flash you have to - after reboot - skip the welcome setup to enable USB setup.

Does that mean that you have to start with a clean empty tablet?

Have just ROOT my Sony Z tablet 4.4.4.

It"s just a lot of Googlen en trying and fail.

2 times BRICKED my tablet, but could restore after long searching the Net.

When the tablet is dead after Flashing it is frightening and sick making!

But i could reflash it with a lot of sweat and stomach cramps.

And then the Kernel flash to .230 (4.4.2)

And Root without internet on tablet {on a Mac) is a big problem, because all the apps are for Android or by the way of Windows

I did the first and last Flash on my Mac, wich is more stable than my Windows.

But the Root had to be on Windows.

FlashTool is a fantastic app. that even downloads the firmware and makes the installer too.

For Root you only need the Kernel installers of .230 and .283 of your specific model.

i'am glad i did the change, because the limitations of kitkat 4.4.4 drove me crazy with frustration.

but it was not easy if you never used a Flashtool before.

But if i could do it, a lot of users can do it too.

And we have learned something new.

Read and learn about the Xperia Flashtool (windows, Mac, Linux) if you want your sd card reader back on the latest Kitkat.

You can download all Flashtool apps on one site.

After Flashing you can write and read to sd card again with no problems at all.

And install Adfree for Root! Away with those terrible and annoying ads!

It is a bit more learning and work than with 4.4.2 (Towelroot)

With another easyroot app on Windows it will work, because there is no Internet on the tablet itself during the flashing.

And Towelroot needs Internet to install.

You can also go back from 4.4.4 to 4.4.2. relative easy if you understand the Flashtool app.

It is possible that the ID of your tablet changes after Flashing, but with Titanium Backup (pro) you can install your original ID number back, so your bu apps work without new set up.

Flashtool is an impressive piece of equipment for users that want their sd card back.

A tribute to the maker(s).

(no flashing ads during browsing anymore!) Adaway app for rooted OS.

3: use the fantastic backup app Titanium Backup (pro), that will give you a useful way to return to original state.

I had my tablet back in half an hour, and with 95% original state.

The backup with Titanium was much bigger than the one from the Sony app. (7Gb to 900Mb)

4: It's a nice way to give Google the finger, for selfish going their onw way, without listening to the users and honor their wishes.

And you can also go back to 4.4.2 with this method, if you find rooting 4.4.4 to intimidating!

Than you can use one click Towelroot app for rooting.

And if the upgrade to 4.4.4 went wrong, and nothing works anymore and no repair possible?

You can also flash to te new firmware.

I think you have to be very unfortunate to really brick a Sony Z.

Most times there is a way to get back to the point your tablet or phone is recognized by the flashtool.

Then you can try it again!
