Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

You could try to reinstall the phones software using Update Service:

http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update-service/

If the behavior persists, there may be a hardware fault and in that case the phone need to be examined by a service center to get it fixed. You can contact your local Xperia care team for more information:
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/How-to-boot-your-phone-into-safe-mode/m-p/348008#U348008

The phone process (com.android.phone) on my Mum's xperia keeps on force closing every few seconds.

The systemui app does the same thing, less often.

I factory reset the phone, but it started doing it again after a reboot.

Am I correct in thinking this is probably a hardware issue?

She's had the phone for around 2 years or so.

Liam
