You must have missed my reply of las Saturday

During a call it is designed that the screen goes off while the 'phone is against your ear (to reduce battery drain and prevent inadvertant button presses). Do you have some sort of case or screen protector that is obstructing the Proximity Sensor which is just left of the speaker mesh at the top of the 'phone?

There is a test for the Proximity Sensor. In the dialler enter *#*#7378423#*#* that gets you to Service Test. Under this option, near the bottom of the list, is Proximity Sensor, once selected the sensor status should change from off to on when covering the top part of the screen.

Dave

I got the name wrong, in the service tests menu it is called "Proximity Switch" there is no proximity sensor option for the X-SP. But same effect, it should change from off to on when the top of the screen is covered.

If you are seeing the proximity switch is "ON" when the top of the screen is uncovered then that is the problem, it should be "OFF" until covered. Anything using the switch, such as the dialler, will blank the screen if it is "ON".

@Stelaki : If other methods provided by the users who commented on this thread didn't work then i suggest you repair your phone using SUS or Sony PC Companion and then clear your internal storage from settings->backup & reset->factory data reset->tick Erase internal storage at the bottom->Reset phone. This should solve the problem. If doesn't then go to the nearest sony service center. Hope this helps.

Stelaki,

When it says "ON" during the test it means that the proximity switch is ON - it shouldn't be ON unless you have the top part of the screen covered. It should say "OFF" and then when you cover the top of the screen it changes to saying "ON". You have no other control over it other than by covering it, either with your hand during the test or your ear when making a call.

So it looks like the proximity switch is faulty as it is saying "ON" when uncovered. It is possible that an app you have installed could be affecting it so you should repeat the test in "safe mode".

If possible try and effect a repair with PC Companion or SUS but I think taking it to a Sony repair specialist is your best bet.

Dave
