messages, voice mail issues

Using the messaging app it says I have 4 unread text messages even though I have viewed and read them. I have since switched to the hangout app. I also have a voice mail notification that won't go away, I have checked my voicemail many times and there is no message but the notification remains. Anyone have the same or similar issues and know how to fix them?

Options --> apps --> hangout --> uninstall updates and clear data

Restart phone

If the above does not work then you may also need to clear data from the messaging application. In this circumstance please bear in mind that this would delete all messages so it would be worth running a backup with PC Companion first.
