What is "Use Internet calling"?

Can anyone explain a setting for me, please?

It's "Use Internet Calling" and it's to be found in Settings / Call settings, right at the bottom.

The options are:

For all calls when a data network is available

Only for internet calls

Ask for each call

I cannot find any mention of it in the on-screen Help files or in the downloadable pdf user manual.

Now I'd ASSUMED it meant (assuming I have selected option #1) that if I was within range of my Home WiFi, any normal calls (incoming or outgoing) would somehow be routed through that, rather than using the normal 2G/3G phone network..... but now I'm not so sure.

There's a setting above it, to log into a "SIP" account for internet calls, I have no idea what a SIP account would be and I'm not sure if one is required to do the job I just described.

I haven't foiund any way to test if it is happening or not, either. I tried switching to flight mode and then turning Wi-Fi back on, but was unable to make any calls.

The main reason I started investigating is that my wife has a poor signal at home on her Samsung Galaxy Ace and I cannot find any similar menu items on her phone at all. But now I'm intrigued about what it's actually doing on mine (if anything!)

Hi,

Unfortunately, Internet calling does not work as you described above. You can't get your normal calls from the 2G/3G network routed through your home Wi-Fi.

To use Internet calling you'll need a SIP (also called VOIP/IP telephony) account/service from a service provider so you can log into that account in the phone.
