I understand that the bootloader can't be unlocked, but it's not what I need anyway. Just superuser access and the power to install root apps. Is there a way?

The method on XDA includes using a malicious software and members have confirmed this on the same thread there. Safer way to root is using Framaroot.

Root Sony Xperia C

Rooting Xperia C

It's titanium backup, used a lot by those who are into rooting. But because you're not rooted yet, it requires the use of ADB. The tutorial will cover it.

After lot of deliberation, i finally took the plunge and rooted my device couple of days back.

Now, i can move any of the system apps (except for few like google play services, maps and couple of others) to SD card. Earlier i used to have free memory of around 250MB, but after rooting i am consistently having free memory of around 550MB.

Whoever is not under warranty period, i suggest you to root the device and then use it like any other high end mobile (except for camera resolution, which we cannot do anything).

With that said, did you unlocked the bootloader? The Xperia C its not a high end phone but uninstalling unwanted preloaded apps will free up some internal storage and RAM

no, we cannot unlock the bootloader...so, there is no chance of installing 'cynogenmod' or similiar stuff. But, i found that the freed up internal memory after rooting the device is like 'something better than nothing'.

You can increase the device memory to 2G,your internal storage will be 204 mb but you won't be using it anyway if you have SD card.Just follow Information Lord's tutorial.
